Head Coat of Arms

Head Definition:
English (chiefly Kent):
1. Nickname for someone with some peculiarity or disproportion of the head (ME heved, OE heafod).
2. The surname Head appears to be locational in origin and is believed to be associated with the English meaning "at the head"; topographic name for someone who lived on a hill or at the head of a stream or valley.
3. Another interesting theroy from Mr. Denny, a rare book dealer of Leicester, is that the Head family probably originated in County Kent and took it's name from the town of Hythe, one of the ancient Cinque Ports on the southeast coast below Dover. Hythe, in turn, means a sand bank, so Hythe or Head was "the man from the sand bank." Hythe is now a seaside resort.
