Bull Definition(s):
English: nickname for a large, aggressive, bull-like man, from ME bul(l)e, bol(l)e. Occasionally, the name may denote a keeper of a bull (cf. Bulman), while the form Simon atte Bole (London 1377) suggests that in addition this may be derived from a house or inn sign. Bula is not attested as an OE word except by the existence of placenames such as Bulmer and Bulwick (see Bullick), where it may in some cases represent a personal name. Nevertheless the vocab. word may well have been in use long before it occurs in surviving records: the deriv. bulluca Bullock is attested in OE. The fact that it gave rise to surnames that are of mainly S English distribution suggests that in the ME period it was established in S England as a vocab. word, and makes it unlikely that it is a Norse borrowing.
