Generation No. 1

 

1.  ANDREW7 LEE  (STEPHEN6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, CHARLES3, RICHARD HENRY2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1770 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Claiborne County, Tennessee.  He married MARGARET/PEGGY DANIELS July 16, 1798 in Botetourt County, Virginia, daughter of PIERCE DANILES.  She was born Abt. 1780 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Claiborne County, Tennessee.

 

Notes for ANDREW LEE:

1.  Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew Lee, one of the first pioneer families of Bell County, Kentucky, settled on the head waters of Martins Fork of Cumberland River, near the present Harlan-Bell county line.  This family lived primarily on Pucketts Creek and Browney's Creek.  Allegedly, The Lee family settled there in 1818, coming from Rogersville, Tennessee.  Andrew Lee had 50 acres of land surveyed in Bell County, Kentucky on April 21, 1819, and patented May 24, 1821(Patent No. 4292, recorded at Frankfort, Kentucky, "G" K.L.W., page 370).  On December 17, 1823 he patented 100 acres (Patent No. 7448).  He sold all this land in 1830.  Andrew Lee was residing in Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1840.

2.  Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew  Lee settled in Southeastern Kentucky near what is now called Cubbage.  Named because of Andrew's encounter with a bear cub there.  The bear attacked him where upon Andrew wrestled the bear and killed it.  The area where this occurred is now called Cubbage, Bell County, Kentucky.

3.  Andrew Lee was the progenitor of most of the Lees that settled in western Lee County, Virginia.  Two of their eleven children were born in Virginia before they moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee, where they both died. They and their children were classified as farmers but had additional occupations, some moving to Harlan County, Kentucky, as coal miners. Other descendants began to settle Lee County, Virginia.

4.  The Lees were God-fearing people of the Protestant faith.  They supported their church and had active roles in their community.  They contributed to the rise in the standard of living and to the development of the country.

5.  The name Lee is well known in Virginia History and throughout the United States.  Lee ancestors have played important roles in war and peace. Lees of today are active in all occupations.

6.  Per Henry H. Fuson; Andrew Lee came from Bunscomb County, North Carolina into Tennessee, then on into Kentucky where he purchased on the head of Martin Fork in 1818.  [Note:  Henry H. Fuson contradicts the place Andrew Lee originated from before moving into Kentucky in his book, "History of Bell County, Kentucky - Vol. 1".  He states two possible origins.]

7.  According to Henry H. Fuson, author of "History of Bell County, Kentucky" Andrew was a relative of "Light Horse Harry Lee" who was the father of General Robert E. Lee.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:

There is no proof that Andrew Lee is the son of Stephen Lee & Anne Poore and thus this lineage does not include information prior to Andrew Lee.  Disputed names listed as Andrew's father are:  William Lee, Hancock Lee, James Lee and Stephen Lee.  I personally believe Andrew Lee was the son of James Lee for various reasons.

5.  MARGARET8 LEE (ANDREW7, STEPHEN6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, CHARLES3, RICHARD HENRY2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1816 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died Aft. 1889.  She married LARKIN WEBB February 28, 1839 in Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee.  He was born Abt. 1814 in Grainger County, Tennessee, and died January 02, 1887 in Pineville, Bell County, Kentucky.

 

Notes for MARGARET LEE:

1.  1880 Census lists her parents as born in Virginia.

2.  She used a mark to sign her widow's pension application, suggesting she could not write.  She was granted a widow's pension of $12 a month until her death.

3.  Jul 19, 1894 - Peggy and heirs signed a conveyance deed to Martin Head.

 

 

 

Notes for LARKIN WEBB:

1.  According to pension application he was 5' 6'' tall with a fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes.  He did sign his pension application.

2.  August 11, 1858, Knox Co. Court land order grant (Book 54, pg. 339-p. 1795) survey 50 acres on Little Clear Creek.  The same day Larkin had 50 acres surveyed on Little Poplar Creek, Knox Co. His land was adjacent to that of James Mason who witnessed the deed along with Elam Partin(Knox Co. Survey Book 3, pg. 309).  Larkin signed with his marker.  The survey mentioned hickory, white oak, beech and chestnut trees.

3.  July 25, 1863 - Filed grant in Knox County Court for 200 acres on the north side of Little Clear Creek (Book 64, pg.211).

4.  A private in Co. K, 49th Regiment Kentucky Infantry Volunteer, enrolled August 4 1863 at Knox Co., for one year.   At Camp Nelson, September 19 1863.  Reported on the rolls from Sept. 19, 1863 to Feb. 29, 1864.  Sergeant.  Served under Captain John Goodin. Mustered out with company at Lexington, Kentucky

December 26, 1864.

5.  July 22, 1869, Larkin & Margaret sold 50 acres on Little Clear Creek to James Mason.

6.  Justice of the Peace in District No. 2, Aug 1870.  Ordered by Circuit Court to hold his courts on the 3rd Thursday of each month as the law requires.

7.  June 12, 1871, Larkin and other Justices were summoned to court to make some arrangements about building a county jail.

8.  June 1872, appointed Justice of the Peace for District No.2

9.  January 26, 1876 bought land from Riley & Sarah Gibson.  Witnessed by James Mason & Wesley Partin.  Lived next door to daughter Rachel and her husband Levi Gibson in 1880.  Census lists both parents as being born in Tennessee.

10. Oct 8, 1883 - Circuit Court orders that Larkin be exempted from Poll Tax.

11. May 5, 1884 - Larkin and Peggy sold 37.5 acres on Big Clear Creek to son Pierson Webb.

12. Dec 22, 1886 - Sold a tract on Little Clear Creek to J.C. Turner.

13. Nov 30, 1895 - Sold 37.5 acres to James Webb.

Notes for DAVID LEE, SR.:

According to another Lee researcher, "David is a first cousin to General Robert E. Lee.  David moved from Virginia to Martin's Fork in Kentucky, lived on a farm, and lived to be at least 100 years old.  David fought in the Civil War on the side of the North. He had nine children."

 

I personally do not believe that David was a first cousin of General Robert E. Lee unless David's parents were someone else.  General Robert E. Lee was the son of Henry Lee, aka Light Horse Harry, and Henry had 4 brothers and 3 sisters; Charles, Richard Bland, Theordorick, Edmund Jennings, Lucy, Mary and Anne.  Any children of these 7 siblings would be the first cousin of General Robert E. Lee.
