John Robert Wallace, born 17 Nov. 1828 in Woodford County, Kentucky, migrated to the "Little Dixie" region of central Missouri about 1860. Probably accompanying him were some slaves in his custody from Wallace's father, William Christian Wallace. Also in the younger Wallace's possession was a family Bible (1832 edition) also a likely gift from his father, whose signature is visible in the upper-right corner of the "New Testament" cover page.

On the inside pages the Wallace men recorded births of some slaves during the period 1843 through 1859; enlarge the image to read the names.
