Sixth Generation

(Continued)

127. Amanda E. (McGlothlan) Boyer (Peter Boyer , Christina (Boyer) Grossnickel , (Bernhard) Peter , Peter Jr. , Peter Sr. ) was born on 9 Apr 1848 in , , IN. She died about 1931 in Savannah, Andrew, MO and was buried in Savannah, Andrew, MO.

A clipping of unidentified source was found in D.W. Boyer family bible; "Sister Dies Sunday Mrs. Amanda McGlothlan of Savannah, Mo., a sister of D.W. Boyer, died at noon Sunday in a hospital in St. Joseph, where she had been ill for the past two months. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon in Savannah and A.L. Boyer, a nephew, is planning to attend. Mrs. McGlothlan is survived by a son, Dr. A.B. McGlothlan of St. Joseph."

Kay Boyer Matthews remembers that she often visited with Aunt Mandy and Uncle Samuel, while she was attending High School in Savannah. She said Aunt Mandy always wore the dunkard bonnet. Daughter-in-law, Anna Fakes McGlothlan bought her beige, brown and blue hats to wear when she went to town with Anna. Kay says Mandy wasn't sure about that, but when she asked Samuel if he thought it was okay, he said that if Anna wanted her to wear them, it was okay. Thereafter, she wore the hats to town for Anna.

Kay said that Mandy died of pneumonia.

Amanda married Samuel M. McGlothlan, son of Charles Thomas McGlothlan and Elziry (McGlothlan) Adkidson, on 20 Jun 1872 in , Nodaway, MO. Samuel was born on 3 Nov 1846 in , , KY.

"Ancestors and Collaterals", Carol Constance (Younker) Boyer, Denver, CO, 1974, reports 1 child, Susan.

Dates estimated from 1880 Mo. census, Indep. Twp., Nodaway Co., pg. 29, Dw. #248. Place of birth of Samuel and parents reported as Kentucky. Also in home was Samuel's mo., ?Elziry?, age 55.

SOURCE: McGlothlan family bible, now (August 1993) in possession of Robert Fisher, St. Joseph, Mo., shows dates of birth and marriage; this bible has no record of the "Susan" reported in "Ancestors and Collaterals". The bible further records "Samuel and Amanda" were married June 20, 1872 "at W.A. Fisher's" by "William McGlothlan, J.P."

Samuel and Amanda had the following children:

257 M i Arthur B. McGlothlan M.D. [scrapbook] was born on 19 Aug 1873 in , Nodaway, MO. He died on 18 Aug 1961 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO and was buried in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO, Ashland Maus..

Date of birth from "Who's Who in St. Joseph, 1929", Baldwin, Sara M. Ed., Robert M. Baldwin Corp., Publishers, Louisville, Ky., St. Joseph, Mo., & Hebron, Neb., 1929.

Living with parents in 1880 census for MO., Indep. Twp., Nodaway Co., pg. 29, Dw. #248, as age 6.

Dr. McGlothlan was a physician in St. Joseph for many years, in practice with Dr. Joseph Fisher, the husband of his niece Annabelle Boyer Fisher.

Family tradition recounts that he was a pioneer in the field of radiology and radiation therapy. He was in later life plagued with multiple skin cancers, which were thought to have resulted from his early exposure to radiation.

"Aunt" Anna and "Uncle Doc" were childless, but both were closely involved with, and attached to, the families of their Boyer relatives.

Dr. Arthur B. McGlothlan died this morning at a hospital in St. Joseph following a lengthy illness. He would have been 88 years old tomorrow.

Doctor McGlothlan retired from his practice as a radiologist March 1, 1953, after specializing in it since 1912. He started his medical practice here in 1903.
Doctor McGlothlan was born at Hopkins, Mo., the son of Samuel and Amanda E. Boyer McGlothlan. He completed Washington University at St. Louis in 1902 and New York Post Graduate College in 1914.

Doctor McGlothlan and the former Miss Anna Fakes of Warrensburg were married Nov. 5, 1908 at Warrensburg and observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958 at their home, 821 North 24th Street. They came to St. Joseph immediately after their honeymoon and the doctor resumed his practice, which at that time was general medicine.

Student of History
Following his retirement Doctor McGlothlan devoted most of his time to the study of history, archeology and scientific subjects.
He and Mrs. McGlothlan, who survives him, took trips abroad in 1953 and 1954, visiting in England, Europe and the Holy Land. Mrs. McGlothlan has been prominent for many years in church and social welfare work.
Doctor McGlothlan was a member of the First Christian Church.
During World War I he was a member of the United States naval medical unit and of medical advisory board No. 65. He served again on the selective service examining board in World War II. He was a trustee of the Ensworth Medical and Educational Fund.
His wife is his only immediate survivor. His body has been taken to the Meierhoffer mortuary.

Anna was born on 26 Oct 1879 in , Nodaway, MO. She died on 14 Mar 1975 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO and was buried in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO, Ashland Maus..
