Third Generation

4. Catherine (Harshman) Grossnickle (Johannes "Hans" Grossnickle , Peter Sr. ) was born on 15 Jun 1752 in , , PA. She died on 28 Jun 1831 in , , MD.

Notes: "Suspected, but not proven, to be the daughter of Johannes "Hanse" and Susannah Grossnickle."--from 1991 correspondence. Since then, I have seen her listed as their daughter. She was 17 years old when she married.

Catherine married Christian Sr. Harshman, son of Matthias Ulrich Harshman and Eva (Harshman) Frey, on 8 Oct 1769. Christian was born on 22 Apr 1744 in , , , Germany. He died on 26 Oct 1816 in , Fred. Co., MD and was buried in , Fred. Co., MD.

Christian Sr. stayed on the farm, "Stony Arabia" after his father and family, except Andrew, moved to West Virginia. He married a neighbor girl, Miss Catherine Grossnickle, and they became the parents of 13 children.

Christian Sr. and Susannah removed to their new farm, "Beighley's Displeasure" when their son, Christian Jr. married; Susannah lived there until it was sold in 1833.(I assume that Christian Sr. died there?)
They are buried on the "Beighley's Displeasure" homestead, located in Locust Valley, between Middletown and Burkittsville, Fred. Co. MD.
Note of interest: 164 3.4 acres of this 222-acre farm consisted of the tracts "Nazarite" and "Tick Nick" which Christian Sr. obtained from his parents.(From 1991 notes of source who wishes to remain anonymous)

He and 1st wife, Fannie had 6 children. They lived in Green Co. OH, where Philip operated a steam sawmill. He was a farmer, a blacksmith and also served as a Dunkard preacher.

He and 2nd wife, Eve Anna Hull-Phalen had 2 sons. Phillip and both wives are buried in the Harshman-Durnbaugh-Zimmerman family cemetery at Zimmerman, Ohio.

Phillip married (1) Frances "Fannie" (Harshman) Durnbaugh on 14 Mar 1804 in , Wash. Co., MD. Frances was born on 5 Aug 1785. She died on 4 Jan 1829 and was buried in Zimmerman, , OH, Family Cem*.

She was a dau. of Samuel and Catharina Durnbaugh.

Phillip also married (2) Eve Anna Phelan Hull on 27 Feb 1838 in , , OH. Eve was born on 19 Sep 1801. She died on 4 Dec 1882 and was buried in Zimmerman, , OH, Family Cem*.

She was a dau. of Peter and Catharina Hull of Lancaster Co. PA.

Susannah and John had 10 children.

Susannah married John IV Hoover, son of John III Hoover and Susannah (Hoover) Stouffer, on 20 Dec 1803. John was born on 20 Jan 1777. He died on 24 Jun 1861.

..."Mr. Hoover was born in the Hoover log cottage, built over the family spring and which is still standing (1986). As the family grew, John IV and Susannah built the new stone house, around 1820. He also built the "Hoover Barn" in 1819, where United Brethren worshiped until their church was built in the village in 1847." (from 1991 correspondence)
16 F ix Catharine (Mertz) Harshman was born on 11 Jul 1786. She died on 14 Apr 1882 and was buried in , Washington, MD.

Catharine and John had 6 children. ...it is thought that "The Mertz family lived with Catherine's mother, Catharina, on "Beighley's Displeasure" until the farm was sold in 1833. They then moved to a farm near Boonsboro in Wash. Co. MD. Catherine died just short of her 96th birthday.

Christena and George had 3 children. ..."The family lived on a 108 acre farm in Bath Twp., Greene Co. OH, where Mr. Warner was a brick-maker by trade". Christena and George are buried in a private plot near their home.

Fined there in 1776 as 'non-enroller' pacifist, & 1808 paid for militia exemption; was listed in 1790, 1800, and 1810 census. 'Beef certificate' issued to him 1781-1782 in Md. state papers; executor records 1785, 1792, 1795 in Md. chancery court index; defendant 1804-1805 in index.
Bought land 1794 (30 acres) & 1796 (171 acres) in Frederick Co., Md. Named his two chief tracts of land 'The Two Sons' (294 acres, willed to son John) & 'The Six Daughters' (218 acres, willed to son Peter, with 40-acre 'Rum Spring'.) Grossnickel Meeting House (Church of Brethren) now stands on part of this land. Probably lived with son John in 1829 census, 3rd Dist., Fred. Co. Will of 1818 was probated Dec. 1822."

- "About the time of the Revolutionary War, Peter built a larger stone cottage further up the hill for his family - there were 9 children. Peter willed this home, which is the eastern portion of the stone farmhouse, to his wife Christena."

badly-eroded tombstone is the only one remaining in the Grossnickle burial plot on 'Susannah', etc., Johannes & Susannah Grossnickle homestead. It is preserved along a fence row, above the farm buildings. All other grave markers have been lost. Most, if not all, were crudely carved native stones."

7. John Sr. Grosnickel (Peter Jr. , Peter Sr. ) was born about 1754. He died in Oct 1815 in Conemaugh Twp., Cambria Co., PA and was buried in , Cambria Co., PA.

Additional Source: Anna Grossnickle Hines, Aug. 1997: "Called Johannes or "Old John". Mentioned in Uncle John Grosnickel's 1775 will and inherited his home farm in 1782 in Frederick Co., MD. Fined there in 1776 as a 'Non-enroller pacifist'. Frederick Co. land records include: 1783 for 'Hog Nest'; 1785 for 'Look Well'; 1791 for 'Strasburgh'; 1796 for 'More Stones Left'. He was in the 1790 and 1800 census for Frederick Co. MD and in Conemaugh Twp., Cambria Co., PA for the 1810 census. Prob. born in Philadelphia, PA."

"He sold Maryland lands in three deeds of 1803, bought 202 acre 'Eden', 1803, in Quemahonig Twp (now Conemaugh Twp) and widow sold that farm in 1818-19. Also bought 3 Conemaugh town lots in 1804 and sold in 1807, 'signed in the German language'".

His "will, signed 1815 in German script, directed immediate sale of all real and personal estate, with children (not named) to share equally after wife's death, but son Jonathan 'not faithful to me and left when..18 years' was to have 3 years wages deducted first"!

In their later years, John and Elizabeth moved from Wolfsville to a farm near Johnstown, PA. "John died in Conemaugh Twp., Cambria Co. PA Married...in the
Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Frederick, Frederick Co. MD to Elizabeth Nieth, dau. of Jacob Nieth. Elizabeth signed with mark 1816-18 as executer of husband's will, gave testimony in 1818 in matter of disagreement between husband and son Jonathan"
