     Esther was a graduate nurse from the Samaritan Hospital and Training School, Sioux City, Iowa, and she practiced her profession a great deal. Esther was born at Centerville, South Dakota, on 18 February 1896. She married Dennis Nelson at Yankton, South Dakota, in 1920. They farmed in the Spink community of South Dakota and later north of Centerville.. Esther died on 20 July 1964 at Centerville, South Dakota, at age 68.

     His body was interred at Centerville, South Dakota. Delmer was born at Centerville, South Dakota, on 23 December 1923. He was the son of Dennis Nelson and Esther Mae Overgaard. Delmer died on 5 August 1962 at Yankton, South Dakota, at age 38.

     Her body was interred at Centerville, South Dakota, at Riverview Cemetery. She is a twin sister of Esther, Dennis' first wife. She was married before to Victor Lynn Nelson, who passed away in 1950. Dennis was first an uncle to Victor and Ethel's children, Ray and Merlin (Bud) Nelson and then became their stepfather!! Ethel Edna Overgaard was born on 18 February 1896 at Centerville, South Dakota. She married Dennis Nelson on 14 February 1968. Dennis and Ethel have a summer home at Centerville, and a winter home at Sun City, Arizona. They have made many trips across the United States with different trailers, as is indicated by the large maps that Dennis maintains marking the various trips with colored pencils. In Sun City there is much fellowship with the couples owning trailers. They take trips in caravans for fishing, sight-seeing, etc., and in Sun City they have monthly pot-luck dinners. While in Arizona, they see Dennis' grandchildren often, who life with their mother in nearby Tempe. The three children are each doing well in school; Tom at the University of Arizona at Tucson, Debbie in high school, and Bruce in the lower grades. Tom has been elected to the all western college conference first team in football. As Sanna prepared her 1964 Three J's From Denmark, Dennis with a load in his car, and another load of fans from Centerville, were attending an Arizona-Iowa State football game in Ames. Tom says of his grandpa: "He's the best and most loyal fan the wildcats have.". Ethel died in 1969 at Centerville, South Dakota.

After graduation from the St. Joseph Veterinary College in 1919, he practiced veterinary medicine in the Vermillion community. George was born at Vermillion, South Dakota, on 8 January 1894. He married Sanna Nelson at Vermillion, South Dakota, on 6 September 1930. Married at the home of M.A. Slocum, the Rev. L.A. Roseland officiating.. George died on 25 March 1947 at Vermillion, South Dakota, at age 53.

     Ana was born at Stenderup, Denmark, on 15 September 1902. She was the daughter of Helene Nielsen. Ana died on 16 August 1904 at Stenderup, Denmark, at age 1.

     Oluf was born on 1 December 1886. He married Rikarde Nielsen. Oluf died on 3 September 1942 at Ribe, Denmark, at age 55.

     Adolf was born on 10 March 1887. Adolf died on 25 January 1917 at Ribe, Denmark, at age 29.

     Ane Madsen was born on 28 June 1885 at Gjerndrup, Denmark. She married Peter Lauritzen Nielsen. Her married name was Nielsen. Ane Madsen died on 5 October 1937 at Lindknud, Denmark, at age 52.

     Dorthea was born at Tved, Denmark, on 7 December 1886. She was the daughter of Jorgen Therkelsen.

     Mette was born at Tved, Denmark, on 29 October 1889. She was the daughter of Jorgen Therkelsen.

     Jens was born at Tved, Denmark, on 31 March 1895. He was the son of Jorgen Therkelsen.

     Sine was born at Lundtofte, Denmark, on 7 April 1885. She was the daughter of Bodil Marie Therkelsen.

     Thomas was born circa 1739. He was the son of Thomas Thornton. Thomas died before April 1783 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

     Sarah was born in 1793. She married Thomas J. Thornton at Montgomery County, Ohio, on 1 September 1813. Sarah died in 1834 at Vermilion County, Illinois.

     Eli was born at North Carolina on 27 March 1801. He was the son of Thomas J. Thornton and Abigail Spencer. Eli died on 21 October 1890 at age 89.

     Mary was born on 12 February 1809. She was the daughter of Thomas J. Thornton and Abigail Spencer. Mary died on 1 January 1837 at age 27.

     Jemima Pearson was born on 20 June 1814.¹ She married Nathan Thornton at Story County, Iowa, on 6 October 1854. The 1860 Census listed Jemima Pearson in addition to Jane Thornton, William Thornton, Thomas Jefferson Thornton and Franklin Delaware Thornton in the household of Nathan Thornton, in Douglas Township, Polk County, Iowa.² Jemima Pearson was enumerated as J. Thornton. Female, age 40, born in Indiana.² She died on 18 March 1882 at Polk County, Iowa, at age 67.³ She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Polk County, Iowa.

     Maria died. Maria was born on 27 April 1823. She was the daughter of Nathan Thornton and Charity Cook.

     He is connected with the Society of Friends Church. John was elected as first township clerk. John was born at Vermilion County, Illinois, on 11 October 1827. He was the son of Nathan Thornton and Charity Cook. He married Esther Lewis at Polk County, Iowa, on 4 April 1850. He resided in 1869. He resided in 1874.

John Spencer Thornton is head of household in the 1900 Census of Douglas Township, Polk County, Iowa as J.S. Thornton. White male, age 52. Occupation: Farmer. Born in Illinois, father born in North Carolina, mother born in Ohio. Enumerated with John Spencer Thornton was Mary Frances Thornton, Ambrose Thornton, Nathan Thornton, Charity Thornton, Mary Etta Thornton and John W. Thornton.² John died on 18 November 1891 at age 64.³

     Esther was born at Vermilion County, Illinois, on 30 March 1833. Birth date arrived at by age at death: 45 y 10 m 26 d.. She married John Spencer Thornton at Polk County, Iowa, on 4 April 1850. Esther died on 28 February 1879 at Polk County, Iowa, at age 45. Her body was interred at Ankeny, Polk County, Iowa, at Greenwood Friends Cemetery.

     Calvin was born at Vermilion County, Illinois, on 7 January 1830.¹ He was the son of Nathan Thornton and Charity Cook. He married Araminta Harris at Polk County, Iowa, on 1 January 1854.^2,3 Calvin died on 3 September 1908 at age 78.

Calvin secured an education sufficient to fit him for successful business. When 17 years old he concluded he could do better than living on a farm and that he would learn a trade. His father attempted to dissuade him, telling him that it was his intention to give each of his children a farm or set them up in business; that if he left his home, he would get no farm, and no start in business from him. Despite the wishes of his father, he apprenticed himself for 30 months to learn the trade of cabinetmaker. At the end of the first year of his apprenticeship, in 1848, he got a ticket-of-leave to visit his father, who had removed to Polk County. His visit completed, he returned and served the remainder of his apprenticeship.

In September 1850 he returned to Fort Des Moines, in a prairie schooner. He at once began work at his trade. And with resolute spirit took up the burden of life, often being reminded of the "no farm" decree of his father, which was faithfully kept, and which he later in life often said was a real benefit, for it forced him to rely upon his own sources.

In January 1851, having reached his majority, he decided to invest in farm land. In April 1851 he was elected clerk of Delaware Township, and soon after Township Assessor, Director of the School District and President of the School Board, and held one or more of those offices so long as he lived in the township. In 1857 Calvin was appointed by the County Clerk to organize the township for election, revenue and judicial purposes. He was elected the first Justice of the Peace in the township, and held the place so long as he resided there. A few years later, his father-in-law died, leaving a farm which is now the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Calvin sold his farm, settled with the heirs of his father-in-law, took possession of the farm, and lived thereon until he sold it to the State Agricultural Society in 1886.⁴
