Jens was born at Copenhagen, Denmark, on 22 February 1838. He was the son of Niels Jensen and Mette Kathrine Rasmusdaughter. He married Ane Kjerstine Mortensen at Denmark on 3 September 1858.1,2 Jens C. Nielsen and Ane Kjerstine Mortensen lived in 1878 at Hjortkaer, Denmark; In 1878 part of the farmland was parceled out and a new house/farm was built next to the old one. Into this new farmhouse moved Jens Nielsen, Ane Kirstine and their children as neighbours to Morten. For the old man this must have been a good period in his life with his eldest daughter and seven grandchildren next door.

Ane Kirstine died in 1879 having given birth to her last child Anton, who died the same day. The 1880 census shows Jens alone on the farm with his seven children. He sold the farm in 1881 and he and his family moved to his father-in-law's house next door. It appears he actually bought morten Christian Lindegard Pedersen's farm and tried to make a living out of it. However, something went wrong for him, and in 1883 he was back at Stenderup working as a miller.2 He emigrated, circa 1883. Point of origin: Denmark. His six youngest children migrated to America with him. They lived in New York for some years before moving on to South Dakota.. Jens died on 23 December 1909 at Gayville, South Dakota, at age 71. He was buried at Danish Lutheran Cemetery, South Dakota. He is the first "J" in the title of the Three J's From Denmark, half brother of Jorgen and Johan Nielsen.
