Gets First Job In Five Years--Then Dies on Way to Work.
     Roy Thornton, 51, of 4118 Bowdoin St., started from his home Monday morning to go to work at his first job in five years.
     On his way to the job he suffered a heart attack. He died on his way to Broadlawns General hospital.
     The job Thornton was to have started was at the Wood Brothers Threshing Machine Co., near E. Fourteenth St. and Aurora Ave.
     During the time Mr. Thornton has been out of work, the family has been supported by three sons. Billy has a WPA job, Roy, Jr., is in a CCC camp at Centerville and Russell is in a CCC camp at Indianola.
     Besides these sons, Mr. Thornton is survived by his widow and four other children, Virgil, Kenneth, Alta and Gladys.

Funeral services were being arranged at Hamilton's funeral home.¹

He spent his entire life in and around Hepburn.

He was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Jenkins in the year 1901. To this union were born 13 children, Mrs. Frank Dunn of Gravity, Iowa, Mrs. Earl Ross of Vancouver, Washington, Mrs. Joe Wardlow of Corning, Iowa, Wesley and Estel in the navy, Clifford serving in the engineering corps, Paul of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Cecil of Cumberland, Iowa, David of Waterloo, Henry at home, and Mrs. Pearl Dunn of Hepburn. Two sons, Guy and Richard, departed this life in infancy. Nine grandchildren, two sisters and four brothers and a host of friends and relatives also mourn his death.

Funeral services were held at the Walker Funeral Home Saturday May 12 at 2 o'clock, with Dr. Orr in charge.

Robert Loghry, 5-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Loghry of near Hepburn, died Friday at the Iowa State university hospital where he had been taken for treatment. The body arrived Sunday and the funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the United Brethren church at Rose Hill cemetery southwest of Hepburn, with Rev. Geo. A. Lawton, pastor of the Methodist church of Villisca, in charge of the service. Interment was in the Rose Hill cemetery. Besides his parents the babe leaves eleven brothers and sisters--Villisca Review.¹ His body was interred on 20 December 1926 at Hepburn, Page County, Iowa, at Rose Hill.

     George was born at Indiana on 4 June 1842.^2,3 He was the son of George William Loghry and Nancy Jane Axtel. He married Nancy Jane Roumans at Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, on 15 March 1866. They were married by a Charles Gates, pastor of Congregational Church, Oskaloosa..⁴ Came to Page County in 1868 by wagon train. Settled about two miles north of Hepburn, where George and Nancy bought 40 acres, partly in the hills. Here they built a dugout where some of their children were born. They cut logs from the place and built a house, believed to be in 1873-78, later adding to it with native lumber from the place. They had 13 children, four died in their youth. Like all pioneers, they depended on what they grew or made. They planted an orchard, berries, asparagus, rhubarb and a large garden; raised chickens and geese, for food and feathers for pillows and featherticks. Their last child was born June 30, 1891, and she died young. George grew his own tobacco and hung it in the hayloft to dry. In later years he was almost blind, but was a very jolly person.

Bill was an employee of Firestone Tire & Rubber in Des Moines. He was active in the Union and also played Santa Clause at the company's annual Christmas Party at the old KRNT Theatre in Des Moines. He was a lifelong resident of Des Moines and was graduated from East High School in 1933.

     Pauline Thornton's book said birthdate was November 15, 1917. I've substituted the year 1916 because this fits in with information obtained from Alta Johnson and age at death (one year old). Doris was born at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, circa 15 November 1916.¹ She was the daughter of Roy Clinton Thornton and Anna Mae Rouse. Doris died on 13 May 1918 at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Larry Warren reports the date of death as May 10, 1918..¹ Her body was interred at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, at Laurel Hill Cemetery, at Block 1 space 81.

     Russell was born at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, on 19 August 1918.¹ He was the son of Roy Clinton Thornton and Anna Mae Rouse. The 1920 Census listed Russell Claude Thornton in addition to Anna Mae Rouse, William Martin Thornton and Carl Roy Thornton in the household of Roy Clinton Thornton, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.² Russell Claude Thornton was enumerated as Russell Thornton. White male, age 1 year, five months old. Born in Iowa as were both parents.² The 1930 Census listed Russell Claude Thornton in addition to Anna Mae Rouse, William Martin Thornton, Carl Roy Thornton, Virgil Franklin Thornton and Kenneth George Thornton in the household of Roy Clinton Thornton, in Lee Township, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.³ Russell Claude Thornton was enumerated as Russell Thornton. Cause of death was a heart attack..⁴ His body was interred at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, at Laurel Hill Cemetery, at SE 1/4 Block R space 141.⁵ Larry Warren states in his research that Russel's middle name was Clinton. He says he was "referred to as Leland Russell Thornton in at least one source; however, his obituary listed his name as Russell C. Thornton." Russell attended East High School and was a member of the Miller Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church.

     He resided at Louisville, Kentucky,. He married Sally Miller. Virgil was born at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, on 3 June 1920. He was the son of Roy Clinton Thornton and Anna Mae Rouse. The 1930 Census listed Virgil Franklin Thornton in addition to Anna Mae Rouse, William Martin Thornton, Carl Roy Thornton, Russell Claude Thornton and Kenneth George Thornton in the household of Roy Clinton Thornton, in Lee Township, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.¹ Virgil Franklin Thornton was enumerated as Virgil Thornton. Single white male, age 9. Attending school. Born in Iowa, as were both parents.¹ Virgil died on 21 October 1962 at Louisville, Kentucky, at age 42.

      Her married name was Lowthorp.¹ Her common name was Joy. Eileen was born at Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, on 31 December 1937. She was the daughter of Carl Roy Thornton and Pauline M. Jackson. Eileen Joy Thornton died on 2 January 2007 at Cypress, Orange County, California, at age 69.²
