Samuel Hardy Crites (21 Jan 1860 Fillmore Township, Montgomery County, Illinois - 21 May 1940 Bost Hill, Montgomery County, Illinois) 

Samuel Hardy Crites married Laura A. ENSOR (3 Apr 1870 - 4 Jul 1957 Irving, Montgomery County, Illinois) 4 Dec 1888 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois.

Laura was the daughter of Zachariah & Maria L. (SCHAFFER) Ensor.

1 - Charles Leslie (13 Jun 1895 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 19 May 1970)

    Charles married Flossie BONE 30 Aug 1915 Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois.  Second marriage Marjorie "Mamie" GOLLEVEI 17 Dec 1919.  

    He had an Army career; he saw service in WWI, was out of service when WWII broke; he re-enlisted; thus serving another hitch.  He attained rank of Captain during WWII.  He retired to San Juan Island off the coast of Washington state and spent the remainder of his days there.

    His obituary says in part, "Charles Leslie Crites M/Sgt. U. S. Army retired, died suddenly May 19, 1970 in Friday Harbor while working on his yard.  He loved the island and had a sharing garden which increased in size each year.  He found contentment here and shared it with others.

    Charlie served in the Armed Forces with few interruptions from 1911 until 1957.  He is survived by his wife, Helen of Friday Harbor, brother W. E. Crites of Lone Pine, California, daughter Marjorie Wentworth of Muskegon, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren.  Interment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery."

    He is buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington.

2 - Ora Milburn (13 Nov 1890 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 20 Jan 1959 Santa Monica, California)

    Ora married Jessie D. ? 11 Dec 1911.  He was a barber in Santa Monica, California during his adult life time.

    He is buried at the Chapel of the Pacific in Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, California.

3 - Lena Rosella (16 Aug 1891 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 4 Jan 1930 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois) (this is the line I follow).

4 - Cecil LeRoy (5 Jul 1898 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 31 Oct 1952 California)

    Cecil married Edna HEFLEY 30 May 1930.  He served in WWI; he enlisted on 4 Apr 1917 at Hillsboro, Illinois.  He fought in the Toul & Somme Sectors - was a Cpl. Cp. G. 18th Inf. 1st Division, wounded at Cantigny; discharged 6 Jun 1919.

    He and Edna lived in Coffeen Illinois for a few years before moving to California.  He was killed in an automobile accident in California.

5 - Edith Louise ( 6 Sept 1901 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 28 Dec 1928 IL)

    Edith married Stephen WHITE Jr 7 Jul 1919 St. Louis, MO.  She is buried at the Olive Hill Cemetery in Coffeen, Illinois.

6 - William Earl "Bill" (9 Aug 1905 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - )

    Bill married Adele ? 25 Jun 1943.  He owns and operated a Mobile home park in Greenfield, California.

7 - Mary Elizabeth (23 Feb 1910 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 1 Jun 1910 Illinois)

    Mary is buried at the Olive Hill Cemetery.

8 - Virginia Olive (30 Sept 1912 Coffeen, Montgomery County, Illinois - 8 Nov 1912 Illinois)

    Virginia is buried at the Olive Hill Cemetery.

9 - Unknown (7 Jun 1889 - 7 Jun 1889)


Notes of Samuel

Sam was baptized at Bost Hill 26 May 1861.  He was a coal miner. He is buried at the Olive Hill Cemetery in Coffeen, Illinois.

Notes on Laura

She was living in a nursing home in Irving, Illinois when she died.
