Descendants of James Warren, Cavalier

James Warren was born in Berwick, Scotland, and banished by Oliver Cromwell after a Battle at Dunbar, Scotland in 1650, he was a Cavalier (Knight), a royalist and he was picked by the King's Surveyor General of Primeval Forests to go out through that territory and see that the King's mark was put on every white pine tree suitable for ships mast, of the diameter of twenty-four inches at a point twelve inches from the ground. Mark of a broad ax in the design of an arrow, made by three cuts through the bark like the track of a crow. It is said that as late as the 1850’s some of these trees and their marks were still to be seen, the King didn’t get them all! When he finished the job, he was given a grant of the whole tract of land from White's Marsh to Warren's Brook, and from the Newichewannock River to Warren's Pond. This area was first settled by James Warren and was later to be called "Dunnybrook".

William Hearl spouse of Margaret Warren is cousin to my Etherington HEARL my direct ancestor and spouse Hannah Goodwin.
