Doves Creek Baptist Church was founded in or about 1788 by the efforts of a 33 year old Baptist minister named Dozier Thornton. The first forty years of church minutes were lost in a fire of the clerks home, so the first members of the church or the date they started meeting is unknown. The first written evidence of Doves Creek Church was when they joined the Georgia Baptist Association in Oct. 1788. Doves Creek later joined the Sarepta Association in 1821 and still later in 1950 joined the Hebron Association. From Court records we learn that the first Church building was erected before a deed was obtained for the land and until completion of the building, the congregation would meet in the homes of the members. Nothing is known of how the first Church was built, its size or physical features. In 1828 Joseph Deadwyler sold Doves Creek Church a two acre lot for ten dollars where the first Meeting House stood. This lot could have been at any point along the old road between the creek and where the Church now stands, but there is evidence that the old Church stood just East of the old Ben Stovall home and South of the Athens highway. On April 3, 1839 the present location of the Church was purchased from Martin Deadwyler for $15.00. It was a 3 acre lot. The second Sanctuary was built in 1839, it was less than 14 feet between floor and joists. It had wooden shutters, and no glass in windows. It was not sealed inside. | |
