charlesworth

Melancholy Accident – We feel deep regret in stating that a severe affliction has befallen our eminent and respected fellow colonist, Mr Mann. On Monday last a female servant proceeded from his residence on the Torrens, accompanied by his infant daughter to Walkerville. The river was considerably swollen by the rains of Sunday. On their return the girl was advised by a passer by, not to attempt any of the temporary bridges in the neighbourhood, but to proceed up the river till she should arrive opposite Mr Mann’s house and there obtain assistance in crossing to that gentleman’s section. This advise unfortunately she did not heed and the result was that both were drowned. The body of the infant was found next day near the spot where the catastrophe occurred; that of the young woman, whose name was Jane Charlesworth, on Wednesday, considerably lower down the stream. A coroners inquest was held on the latter day and the verdict in both cases was “found drowned”. It was reported that the unfortunate young woman was intoxicated. We are happy to say that the assertion has been clearly disproved.
