Helpful Hints when searching for headstones

Check “unknown” headstones – some headstones can be illegible whether by age or broken.

Headstones do not always show surname. They may only show Christian names or initials

Sometimes females although married may have been buried with their parents, sister or brother.

Surnames are not always shown on headstones, therefore a search under the maiden name, 

or sisters married name may be of benefit to you.

Do not assume that a male and female inscription on a headstone is that of a married couple. I have come across

many instances where they are a brother and sister etc

Extraordinary Wife – In Startham Church is the following singular inscription –

strange, if true –“ Elizabeth, wife of Major-General Hamilton, who was married 47 years,

and never did one thing to disoblige her husband

Record Grave Digger to Retire after 50 years – Bathurst March 21

John England has retired after 50 years service as grave digger to the local cemetery.

During the period he dug 7500 graves, and estimated to have walked 2000 miles

to perform his duties; both are claimed as records for Australia
