Wm. E. Rohr came up with his name by combining information from thebiography of James R. Thomson, the 1860 census of Winfield Township(Scott co., IA.), and the Long Grove Cemetery List. The final clue camefrom the History of Winfield Township, from the book titled "History ofScott County, Iowa" (1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co.)

This fact was stated in this history as "Hugh M. Thomson, John Robertson,John Pollock, and John Grieve, all brothers-in-law direct from Scotland, also settled in this grove at a later day, and are said to be not onlygood farmers, but scientific in their operations, and pay great attentionto improvements in agriculture and the breeding of good stock."

BIOGRAPHY: He was listed as a "Farmer" in the 1860 census of WinfieldTownship, Scott co., IA. with $3400 of real estate. Besides his wife (40year old Agnes), there was a 19 year old Wm. Johnson, a 22 year old JamesSteil (both "Farm Laborers), a 14 year old Wm. McCutchon, and hismother-in-law (80 year old Jane Robertson), living with him at the time.

BIOGRAPHY: He was a member of the Long Grove Plowing Society, which wasorganized April 5, 1858. "The objects of the organization were to incitean interest in plowing, and promote a more thorough and efficient systemof cultivation of the soil by the best approved methods. The members ofthis society took premiums for the best work at every county and statefair where they competed. In 1874 the older members of the societybecoming inactive through age, interest in the affair lagged, and thework of the association virtually ceased." (This info came from theHistory of Winfield Township, as stated in book titled "History of ScottCounty, Iowa, 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co.")

BIOGRAPHY: He, his wife, and seven "other" (maybe non-related) indivuals, are living together on John's farm in Winfield, Scott co., IA. at thetaking of the 1880 census (see FHC film #1254363, page 262B). Theseother indivuals were the following:
John Hardie - 27 yr old IA. born (Both parents born in Scotland)
Thomas Hardie - 25 yr old IA. born (Both parents born in Scotland)

James Gordon - 33 yr old Scotland born (Both parents born in Scotland)
Jane Gordon - 30 yr old IA. born (Both parents born in Scotland)
Crawford Gordon - 3 yr old IA. born(probably a son to James & Jane)
Charles Gordon - 2 yr old IA. born (another probable son of James & Jane)

Both Crawford & Charles' parents' birth places match the birth place ofJames & Jane Gordon. It appears the Hardie's may be brothers and thatthe Gordons are all one family (Jane may even be a sister to the Hardie'swhen you take into consideration the birth places of each person andtheir parents' birth place). John Pollock and his wife were both 60years old at this time. Living 5 farms away from the Pollock farm wasthe John & Mary Robertson farm, who were neighbors to the Thomas &Margret Greive family (may be related to John Greive).
