The Lane family is English, thought to be from Staffordshire. Thetradition is that the family came from the Lanes of Bromley Hall, whoseColonel John Lane and sister Jane assisted Charles 11 to escape after thebattle of Worcester, 1651, when Jane rode pillion behind Charlesdisguised as her servant. For this service the family were permitted toadd to their coat of arms a quartering of three loins of England on thesheild, and to assume as a crest a horse bearing the regal crown betweenhis forehoofs, with the motto, "Gerdes le Roy." This crest appears, according to family tradition, on the silver spoons used in the family ofCol. Joseph Lane, son of William Lane of Westmoreland, and it has beenthought that through the Irish branch of the Staffordshire family, theVirginia and Maryland Lanes descended. This is important only becausethe tradition seems to have been preserved in considerable detail, and somay be a clue to provable facts. So far, it remains a family story.
The first proved records in this line are in 1740, when a William and aJames Lane, brothers, moved from Westmoreland to Prince William county,Virginia, to lease adjoining tracts of land from George Turberville, agent of Lord Fairfax. This was the form of conveyance in use at thetime - - a quit-rent was paid to Turberville, who in turn guaranteedquit-rents to Lord Fairfax. The two brothers had married sisters,William to Sarah, James to Lydia Hardage, daughters of James Hardage(1686-1749) and his wife Elizabeth ----- . The lease describes the twobrothers as coopers. William lived only about two years after the leaseswere signed; his widow married secondly Col. Francis Summers.
