He was a "Fifer", on the Virginia line during the Revolutionary War.
With brother Henry (?), in 1785 they crossed into Kentucky to claim aRevolutionary War land bounty. Unfriendly Indians forced return tofrontier, settling in Buncombe county. About 1790, he returned toKentucky and built a homestead in old Lincoln county, now Knox co., KY.His land holdings grew to 1200 acres.
He was the first Hensley into Kentucky.
The following is an account from Daryl Hensley's research:
On Jan. 4th, 1784, Lewis applied for a Land Grant in Lincoln co.,VA. for 200 acres on the Cumberland River (see "Old Kentucky Surveys andLand Grants"), Ky. Historical Society, Frankfort 1926, page 16. Hisfather-in-law, Captain Baker, filed Land Grants for 8000 acres in hisdaughters name (Betsy Baker). See "Lincoln Co. Deed Book 16", pages 75,77-78. Lewis's attempt to settle the land was difficult. The Indiansmassacred many settlers and family history has him constantly moving inwith Harry (?) when this happened or when his wife was expecting. Hiswife grew tired of this life and is said to have left him. FamilyHistory has it that he married Nancy Howard, older sister to Mary Howard,who married Harry's son, Henry Halen. This was confirmed in SamuelHoward's will, that shows Mary Hensley wife of Henry, and Nancy Hensleywife to Lewis,receiving their share of the estate. Lewis's land was soldto family members through the years and eventually became "HensleySettlement" at Brush Mountain in Harlan county, Ky. Hensley Settlementis now a U. S.
