Then last August, he had anx-ray & the doctor found that he had an enlarged spleen and a growth, which they said was cancerous and they said that they could not operate. He was up and around until about 10 days before his death.
George Ferry had always lived in the old Ferry home where severalgenerations of Ferrys had lived. Your grandfather, Melancthon Ferry, lived there & the six older children were born there; Aunt Delia (CarrieVan Norman's mother); Uncle Ira (George, Henry, & Ira Ferry Jr.'s father)and my mother, were all born there, as well as, 3 children who died yearsago - my mother's brother George, who died at the age of 16 years, andViola & Harriet, who died at the age of 12 years and 2 years. Then UncleIra's children were all born there - George, Henry, Ira Jr., Lillie, &Ella Goss. Then George's family were all born there - Irvin, Lillis,Elmer, Laurin, & Viola. Thies Nagel [Parents] was born in 1814 in Brockdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He died on 14 Apr 1884 in Big Rock, Scott Co., Ia.. He was buried in Apr 1884 in Big Rock Cemetery, Big Rock (Liberty twp.), Scott co., Ia.. He was endowed in the SUBMIT temple. He married Wiebke Cathrina Hass on 11 Jul 1851 in Burg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. They were sealed in the SUBMIT temple.
Had his birth as 16 Jan 1819 in Holstein, Schleswig-Hlstn, Germanypreviously (this could be the info on the other Thies Nagel that isn'tours).
The current birth date & place, and his marriage date & place (includinghis wife's full maiden name) came from a German Genealogy record onFamily History Center film #1,201,639; item # 3; titled "Genealogien1600-1874; Burg, Germany Area". His parents' names and his brother'sname came from this film also. This is the correct information.
Per the above film record, he and his wife and children were residing inFriedrich VII.-koog in 1863.
Thies, his wife (Wiebke Cathrina), and several of their children, immigrated from Germany to the U.S. aboard the ship "Holsatia". Theysailed from Hamburg and Havre arriving in New York on 13 April 1870.Their last residence in Germany was Friedrichskoog, where he was a"miller". Note: Friedrichskoog is in western Germany on the west coastabout 50 air miles NW of Hamburg and close to Burg, Germany.
Thies and his family (wife and 6 children at the time) show up in the1870 census (dated Aug. 12, 1870) of Davenport, Scott co., IA. He waslisted as a "miller". They were family #294 in the census of Davenport.Note that there was another Thies Nagel (a carpenter) married to aCatharina, family #162, in the same census for Davenport. This secondfamily is not our ancestors.
Thies was naturalized in Scott county, IA. in January 1876. (See record"Naturalization, Index of Scott co., IA." page 523, vol. 2, Natural.Series N-1.)
In 1880, found him, his wife (listed as "Katie"), and 3 children, Henry,Louis, and Bertha (the others may have been visiting elsewhere whencensus was taken), all living on Main Street, city of Nichol, Piketownship, Muscatine co., IA. (family #29 on FHC film #1254358, page 222C;listed as Thies Waget on the 1880 census CD's) as of June 1, 1880. NOTE:Wm. E. Rohr has copies of all of the above records.
Have not been able to find him after the above census. Checked theprobate and land records for Scott and Muscatine counties, and found notrace of him. No Thies Nagel in the 1885 census of Muscatine county. Norecord of him in "Muscatine co., IA. Grave and Genealogy; Iowa GenealogyIndex, Marion - Posten; Muscatine co., IA. Death Index; or the 1905Muscatine co . census.
His death date & place, and burial place came from "Iowa Cemetery GraveRecords - Scott County", film #1,023,110 volume #3 (Big Rock Cemetery islocated on 37th. Ave. south of the center of the town of Big Rock). Alsofound his wife and mention of a Louis C. and a Bertha Nagel buried in thesame cemetery; these could be his children
Wiebke Cathrina Hass [Parents] was born on 17 May 1831 in Burg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She died on 10 Jun 1910 in Iowa or Illinois. She was buried in Big Rock Cemetery, Big Rock (Liberty twp.), Scott co., Ia.. She was endowed in the SUBMIT temple. She married Thies Nagel on 11 Jul 1851 in Burg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. They were sealed in the SUBMIT temple.
Her full name, birth date & place, marriage date & place, parents' names& data, and her paternal grandparents' names, all came from the film#1,201,639; item #3; titled "Genealogien 1600-1874 Burg, Germany".
Wm. E. Rohr has found a 69 year old, German born, widowed, "Katherina"Nagel living with her son Friedrich (was he named after the town inGermany where his parents lived??) in Bluff Precinct, Monroe co., ILL. inthe 1900 census of the same (FHC film #1,240,330 page 228B). This is ourCathrina. This record indicates that she was the mother of 4 livingchildren, out of 10 born, which agrees with the information we have, sofar. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1860, which differs from the recordson Thies and the passenger list, by 10 years.
The death date and place of burial came from the same record as herhusband's death information. Please note that this record has recorded:"Merke Hass (female) 1813 to 6-10-1910; Big Rock cem., Big Rock". It isbelieved this is our "Wiebke Cathrina" because of the use of the name"Hass" and the birth year matching our other records (Big Rock Cemeteryis located on 37th. Ave. south of the center of the town of Big Rock).
BIOGRAPHY: She was living at 600 Pine St., in Davenport,IA. as of May1906 (? hard to read the last number on the card), per a post card thatwas sent to her from a grandson, John, that lived in Lone Tree, IA. Hestarts out his writing with "Dear Grandma." John speaks of a fire in"the foundry" that makes one think this "foundry" was maybe a businessJohn owned, or worked in. The front of this same post card has a pictureof two men on it. Believe they are Zimmerman brothers.
They had the following children:
F i Margaret Nagel was born in 1852 in Germany.
Found a 29 yr old Prussian born (same as Germany) Margaret, who is thewife to a 31 yr old Prussian born farmer Louis Schaefer, living in theMontpelier, Muscatine co., IA. in the 1880 census (FHC film #1254358,page 97C). They also had 2 yr old daughter, Lizzie (IA. born) and an 11month old son, Henry (IA. born), living with them. Montpelier is onlyabout 15 miles east of the city of Muscatine. Could this be our Margaret?
Also found a 27 yr old Maggie Voss living in Liberty, Scott co., IA. (FHCfilm #1254363, page 240 B) with her husband, 32 yr old Holstein bornChrist Voss (farmer). Their children were 5 yr old Henry, 3 yr oldWilliam, and 3 month old Emma, all who were born in Iowa. Here isanother possibility. In the same area is a 25 yr old Holstien bornMinnie Anderson, who could be our Mina Nagel.
There also was a 29 yr old Prussia born Marg Stahmer, who was the wife to30 yr old Henry Stahmer (Prussia born "laborer"). They were living inDavenport, Scott co., IA. in 1880 (FHC film #1254363, page 459D).

She was living in the homeof a 57 yr old Prussia born Lena Horn, who also had in the same householda 32 yr old IA. born John Harker and a 21 yr old IA. born Charles Hass, both who were "Teamster". This may be our Mine Nagel after a marriage.M iii Henry Rudolph Nagel M iv John Daniel Nagel F v Rosa Amanda Fredericka Nagel F vi Minna Nagel was born in 1864 in Germany. (FHCfilm #1254331, page 180B), which is the next county just north ofMuscatine county, where his parents lived. This particular John Nagelmay have worked for a R. W. Scott, who was the only "Mill Wright" livingin the Rochester area in 1880. Living with this John was his sister, 14yr old Prussian born Theresa Nagel. Both of their parents were born inPrussia. This could be our John Nagel because our's wasn't living withhis parents at the time. If so, this Theresa must be Saluse Nagel, bornabout 1866. This Saluse was not living with her parents in the 1880census.M viii Louis Nagel F ix Bertha Nagel was born in 1870 in Iowa. She was sealed to her parents in the SUBMIT temple.
