He is not anywhere in Anne Arundel county, including Annapolis, in the1880 census (FHC film #1,254,494).

Searched the following FHC films for him in the 1880 census of Baltimore.
1,254,498 2nd - 5th. Wards
1,254,500 8th - 10th. Wards

Wm. E. Rohr did find a 14 year old MD. born (as were both of his parents)Joseph Russell in the 1880 census of the 3rd. Dist. of Howard co., MD.,which is the county next to Baltimore co. (see FHC film #1254511, page379D). He was working as a "Servant on farm" when this census was takenof the Eli Jones family there. This could be our Elijah Joseph, as hewent by Joe. (Remember that sometimes the census takers didn't get thecorrect info on different people, such as the birth place of theirfather.)

According to the 1890 Baltimore City Directory, Elijah J. Russell, whowas a "sail maker" at the time, was living at 421 N. Carrollton Ave.This was our Elijah before he completed his medical schooling. He wouldhave been 24 years old at the time. He was living with his mother atthis same address.

Per the information on World Family Tree CD #10, Elijah Joseph married anAlice C. Wagner on March 16th, 1892. This record also shows that theyhad a one daughter but gave no name for her.
WE HAVE NOT ENTERED THIS DATA INTO THE DATA FIELD, UNTILL WE CAN VERIFYIT SOMEHOW.

Elijah became a physician in the Baltimore, MD. area. He attended to hismother in her final stay here on this earth. We know he was married atthat time because his wife also attended his mother during her last fewweeks of life.

Need to find him in the 1900 census for Baltimore.

As per the 1910 census of Baltimore, he was a General Practice Physician, living at 423 N. Broadway. His wife (Sarah C.), a 2 yr. old daughter(Ruth C.), a 10 yr. old step-son (William Hasson), and a 20 yr. oldservant (Elizabeth) were living with him. This census also indicatesthat this marriage was the second marriage for both, he and his presentwife, and that they (Elijah & Sarah) had been married to each other for 3years.

Per the World Family Tree CD #10, Elijah was married to an Alice C.Wagner on March 16, 1892 and they had a daughter. If this is correct, this would have been his first wife.

Per the 1920 census of Baltimore, they were living at 156 N. Milton Ave.Elijah was still a G.P. and his step-son, now 20 yrs. old and stillliving with them, was a bank teller.

Per information received from Katherine (Russell) Prosser, which she hadverified verbally with Fire Dept. Custodian of Records (microfilm recordsmaintained in the Baltimore City Archives), Elijah Joseph Russell was theChief Surgeon of the Baltimore City Fire Department (before 1925).Katherine also stated that he went by "Joe."

His father's pension file states that "there is no public record ofeither the city of Baltimore, or of the churches, in which they (meaningElijah James' children) were christened." However, it further states inElijah J.'s (meaning Elijah Joseph's) case there is a "record of birth".Don't know if this would be a civil record or a church record.

Believe all ordnances were done by June Rohr in the Seattle Temple in1994.

Once had his DOB and place as Jan. 1839 in maybe Annapolis, MD.

In the 1860 census of the 3rd. Ward of Baltimore, he was a 20 yr. old"sail maker" still living with his parents.

There is mention of a John E. Brown as having "transferred from the 6th.Maryland" into Co. A, 1st. Maryland Infantry (page 271 of the unitshistory during the Civil War). This is the same unit that hisbrother-in-law, Elijah James Russell, was in during the Civil War.

In the 1870 census of Annapolis, MD. (FHC film #552, 067, pg. 709), whichis in the same area of Annapolis as some of his siblings and hisbrother-in-law, Elijah James Russell, John was listed as a "sail maker".He was listed with his wife, Artridge, and their first child, John.

Found him and his wife & kid living in house #10 on Prince George St., inAnnapolis, MD. in the 1880 census. This also showed his father as beingborn in MD.

John was a "city policeman" in 1880. He lived across and down the samestreet as his brother, Travers.

John was one of the six police officers that made up the entire policeforce of Annapolis, MD. between 1880 to 1882. Per the history of theAnnapolis Police Department, it reads "On Nov. 14, 1881, this grouppresented a special petition to the Mayor and Council requesting the Cityto purchase 'revolving pistols and nippers' for the use of the men. Thepetition explained that since the men had just purchased all their ownuniforms, the additional expense of pistols and nippers would present toomuch of a financial hardship. This petition ended with a recommendationthat 'Smith & Wesson' pistols were ideally suited for police work. Allindications are that the Council showed a favorable reaction to thepetition."

John held the office of "Chief of Police" of Annapolis, MD. for a shorttime in 1883, per the history of that department.

In the 1900 census, he was a "waterman" living on Prince George St. inAnnapolis, MD. Some of the dates came from this census. Showed them asbeing married 30 yrs. in 1900.
