BIOGRAPHY: His year of birth previously came from a marriage registerfor he and Minnie, and the 1870 census of Annapolis, MD. when he wasliving with his parents there. The exact date and place came from hisfather's pension file.
BIOGRAPHY: He was living with his widowed mother in her sister's home(Mrs. Amy Love) in Baltimore, MD. at the taking of the 1880 census. Hisolder brothers were not there with Allen and his mother in 1880.
BIOGRAPHY: The below four paragraphs were found by Wm. E. Rohr and camefrom the book titled "Portrait and Biographical Record of DuPage & CookCounty, Illinois" that was printed in 1902 (there are a few dates thatare off a little). "Allen T. Russell: Among the younger men of DuPageCounty of marked character and ability, none stand more prominent thanthe present County Surveyor, whose name heads this record. He was bornin Annapolis, MD., December 26, 1868, and is the son of Elijah James andCaroline (Brown) Russell. The father was a native of Pennsylvania, andthe mother of Maryland, but her people originally came from Connecticut. The Russell family is of English origin. The grandfather of our subjectserved in the War of 1812, and members of the family were numbered amongthe heroes of the Revolution. As soon as the first call for volunteerscame for the defense of the union, Elijah James Russell entered theservice as a member of the First Maryland Infantry. Some of his brothersenlisted at the same time in the First Maryland Confederate Infantry, andthe two regiments were engaged in battle at Washington. The father ofour subject was a land-owner of Maryland, and died in Annapolis in 1873,when about forty-two years of age. His widow is still living inBaltimore. They are the parents of four children, three of whom arestill living; John Thomas, Elijah Joseph and Allen Traverse.
Our subject was only about six years of age when his father died, andwith his mother he then removed to Baltimore, residing in that place andin Washington for some time. He had the advantages of the public schoolsof the two cities, and at the age of eleven years he entered theMcDonough School of Baltimore County, a preparatory militaryinstitution. There he continued for four years, pursuing the regularpreparatory course of study. Immediately afterward he entered JohnsHopkins University in Baltimore, from which he was graduated as a civilengineer at the age of nineteen, having entered the school when a youthof sixteen. Locating in Baltimore, Mr. Russell began the prosecution ofhis chosen profession, and later went into the office of the WesternMaryland Railroad of that city, where he continued for about threemonths, when a vacancy occurred in the field, and he was made assistantto Maj. Bowen, Chief Engineer of the Western Maryland Railroad, in thebuilding of the Gettysburg Short Line, which runs from the Blue Ridgesummit, north of Gettysburg. There his ability found practicalapplication, he doing almost all of the work himself.
After continuing with the Western Maryland for about nine months, Mr.Russell secured an appointment at Washington, as Assistant United StatesEngineer, and worked in that capacity in surveying the Missouri Riverfrom Ft. Bismarck, N.D., to Kansas City. The object of this survey wasto make improvements along the banks so as to protect the cities andtowns which border the river, as the stream is subject to change in itscourse, to the great injury of the places where such cut-offs are made. The engineer's work was to ascertain the fall in the river, so thatprotection could be made when needed. Mr Russell's next work was aschief of an engineering corps in the building of the railroad on theIsland of Jamaica, West Indies. He came to DuPage County on the 7th ofJuly 1891, taking up his residence in Wheaton, and was elected CountySurveyor in November, 1892.
On the 17th of April, 1893, Mr. Russell was united in marriage withMiss Minnie G. Ferry, daughter of Melancthon and Nellie M. Ferry, ofWheaton. Her father died in Aurora about four years ago. He was one ofthe early settlers of DuPage County, and was well known as a prosperousfarmer and an honored citizen. Our subject and his wife hold membershipwith the Congregational Church. He is now building a pleasant home inEvergreen Park, and expects to make this place his permanent residence. In politics, Mr. Russell is a stalwart Republican and an inflexibleadherent of the principles of his party. He is a young man of fineattainments and great natural ability, and the success which has alreadycome to him argues well for the future."Notes of Katherine (Russell) Prosser, for Allen, state: "1872: Sent toMcDonough School in Baltimore, MD., for orphaned and destitute children, per James Allen Russell, attended from kindergarten through high school, per Nanetta Russell Whittington, where he learned the trade ofsurveying. Per Nanetta Russell Whittington, Allen T. Russell was honoredby McDonough School in the 1940's as one of its first graduates."
BIOGRAPHY: He was listed as a "Civil Engineer" on the marriagecertificate for he and Minnie, as of April 19th, 1893, in Wheaton, DuPagecounty, IL.
BIOGRAPHY: He was a civil engineer. He worked for the railroad inIndiana for many years (as reported by Elizabeth G. Russell but wehaven't found any record of such, yet).
BIOGRAPHY: They had their home in Aurora, while he was president of theChicago Northwestern Railroad, until it (their home) was sold to a Mr.Killion, at which time they moved to Wheaton and bought an estate there. This estate had a good size colonial style house, being very nice insideand out (according to personal recollection of his granddaughter,Elizabeth, who had visited her grandmother after their divorce).
BIOGRAPHY: Some information is from the 1900 soundex of Wheaton, DuPageCo., IL. when this family lived at 325 Seminary {Milton Twp.}. On thiscensus (ED. # 33, sheet #5; page #220A), dated June 5, 1900, Allen washead of the house, born in December of 1868 in Maryland (as were both hisparents, per this census). His occupation was a "Civil Engineer". He"rented" their home at this time, per this census. Living with Allen, atthis time, was his wife (Minnie) of seven years, and their two sons, 5year old Allen T. and 3 year old Charles C. This information came fromthe 2nd. Ward of Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage county, Illinois.
As per information from Wm. Rohr's mother, Allen had a street inBaltimore, MD. named after him, {Russell St. or Ave.; it could have beennamed after his father instead}.
BIOGRAPHY: Per a 1910 city directory of Baltimore, he was listed asliving at the same address as his older brother, Elijah J., but he doesnot show up on the census with them. It could be that he was there whenthe information was collected for the directory, dated April 1, 1910, butthen relocated before the census was taken.
BIOGRAPHY: Per the 1910 census of Milton, DuPage county, IL., he wasliving at 407 Washington Street in Milton. He was a "clerk" for therailroad at the time and was renting a house. His wife, Minnie G., andtheir 2 sons, Allen & Charles, were living with them then. This info canbe found on sheet #15A of ED #9. NEED A COPY OF THIS CENSUS WITH DATES
BIOGRAPHY: He and Minnie were divorced sometime between 1910 and 1920census. It was said that he took one son, Charles C. Russell, with himafter the divorce. This is not correct. In the 1920 census ofNaperville Township, IL. (FHC film #1,820,366 page 150A), dated January9, 1920, Charles is still living with his mother there.
BIOGRAPHY: Allen moved back to MD., where his mother & a brother were, and remarried per the 1920 census for Denton, Caroline Co., MD. {on filewith Wm. E. Rohr's records}. His second wife's name was Nanette L. Healso had another son by this marriage, which he also named Allen TraversRussell Jr., the same name as his first son from his previous marriage, which was to Minnie. (We have entered these two Allen Travers RusselJr.'s as 1st. and 2nd. in our database).
BIOGRAPHY: He became a city surveyor for the city of Baltimore, MD. by1914 and lived in Crownsville, MD. once, per information received fromKatherine (Russell) Prosser (Crownsville is north of Annapolis andsouthwest of Baltimore, near Severn, MD.).
BIOGRAPHY: He was living in the 3rd Election District of Carolinecounty, MD. at the taking of the 1930 census, dated April 9, 1930 (see ED#6-8, sheet 3B, family #86). He owned their home and was employed as aCivil Engineer. Living with him then was his second wife, Nanette L.,and their two sons and two daughters. Note that this census recordindicates that Allen's father was born in Pennsylvania.
This researcher (Wm. E. Rohr) has had the MD. State Archives search for adeath record for him from 1914 to 1944 in all 23 counties of MD. Theycould not come up with any record. He could have died in a later year ormaybe relocated again to another state before he died. He may have movedback to ILL., as his grand-daughter (Elizabeth) remembers him visiting inthe area of his first wife.
BIOGRAPHY: He was still alive as of July 11, 1938, because hisgrand-daughter, Elizabeth, has a picture of him with that date on it. Itis not know where this picture was taken, yet. It was developed by"Hicks Photo Process"; location unknown.
CHRISTENING: His father's pension file states that "there is no publicrecord of either the city of Baltimore or of the churches in which they(meaning Elijah James Russell's children) were christened."
The below reply, to an inquiry, was dated October 29, 2003.
