David Flunel Pettit [Parents] was born on 14 Mar 1824 in N.y.. He died on 2 Sep 1896 in Page, Holt Co., Nebraska. He was buried in 1896 in Venus, Knox Co., Ne.. He married Betsey Elizabeth Brill on 4 Jul 1865 in La Valle, Sauk Co, Wisconsin.

Other marriages:
Adams, Laura

Had his DOB & place as about 1826 in England at one time (see 1880 censusof Ironton, Sauk co., WI. with his son, Adelbert, on it).

He farmed before and after his enlistment.

He enlisted in Co. I, 35th. Reg., WI. Infty. in Madison, Dane co., WI. onFeb. 15, 1864 to serve in the Civil War. He was a private under thecommand of Capt. Lyman B. Everdell (or Everdale). David came down withchronic diarrhea the 2nd. of June 1864 at Fort Hudson, LA. This "causeda weakness of the back and general disability caused by exposure, sleeping in a wet tent and drinking bad water". He was sent to ahospital at Memphis, Tenn., and also to De Balls Bluff, Ark. He remainedsick and reported to hospital in Madison, WI. He remained sick and wasdeclared disabled 3/4's of his time. He was honorably discharged atMadison on 14 June 1865.

He and Betsey were married by Rev. C.C. Holcomb in La Valle, Sauk co.,WI. per his pension files. David was a resident of Ironton when theymarried. Wm. Rohr has on file a copy of this pension file and a copy oftheir Marriage Register.

The 1870 census of Ironton, WISC. shows him, Betsy, and 6 children (2from his 1st. marriage, 2 from Betsy's first marriage, and 2 from hismarriage to Betsy). He was a farmer with $4400 of real estate at thetime. This census also shows David as being born in N.Y.

Per his pension file, they were living in Ironton, Sauk co., WI. , as ofMarch 9, 1880 and David was 54 yrs old.

By mid summer of 1880, David, Betsey, and their 6 children (William, theoldest child, was of Betsey's first marriage), had moved to Verdigris,Knox co., Nebraska (maybe this should read "Verdigre") per the censusthere (see FHC film #1254751, page 98C). David was listed in this censusas a 54 year old N.Y. born "farmer", whose parents were born in Canada.

He and Betsy moved to Page, Neb. sometime between 1870 and 1896. Theywere living there by about 1891 or '92 per an affidavit in his pensionfile signed by their neighbor, Robert Gray, in 1897. Per his pensionfile, they owned 1 acre of land (lots 12 -15, block 4, near Page), valuedat $50. They had a small frame house (14x20 ft.), with shed addition(10x20 ft.), and a small barn, all valued at $175. They had 2 cows ($50)and a buggy ($25). They may have moved there about 1891 per the pensionfile. (Note: It appears that they moved away from WI. after 1879 and toNebraska by 1884 per the data on Cora E. Pettit's birth and death. ) PerDavid's pension file, he died of kidney and bowel problems at 11:00 PM.

David and Betsey's adjoining neighbor in Page, Neb. was a Mr. RobertGray. He (Robert) stated that he owned the farm next to them and knewthem for the past 5 or 6 years, as of March 1897.

There is also mention of a George W. Bible and George Woolever in David'spension file. Is this the same George Bible related to Margaret Smelcer, who married Adelbert G. Pettit (David's first son)?

There remains 93 pages to his pension file in the archives, that Wm. E.Rohr does not have. He has none of David's military records either.

As of Aug. 16, 1860, when the census was taken of Spring Green, Sauk co.,Wisc., there was a Jesse Pettit (75 yrs. old, born in England) and a MaryPettit (70 yrs. old, born in N.Y. ) living there. Could these be theparents to David? (Ref: Nat. Arch. film #1429, pg 828, line 40, and line#1 of pg. 829).

In the 1880 census of Wisc. we found the following families, all head ofhouseholds born in N.Y., that could be brothers to David:
James Petitt: 39 yrs. old, and family, living in Kingston, Green Lakeco. (Ed 67, Sh 4)
