BIOGRAPHY: Per his obituary, Thomas immigrated to North America in 1822with his parents (probably Patrick and Winfred Bourke), first settlingsomewhere in Canada. They lived there until 1859, when Thomas moved toBaraboo, Sauk co., WI.
BIOGRAPHY: In the 1870 census (dated July 20, 1870) of Baraboo, Sauk co.,Wisc. there was a 52 yr. old Ireland born farmer by the name of ThomasBourke (spelled Burke in the census). With him was 21 yr. old Ann (b.Wisc.) who was "keeping house". Don't know if this was a wife or childof his. Next was a 3 yr. old James (b. Wisc) and an 11 yr. old Thomas(b. Wisc.). For this last Thomas, it is indicated that both of hisparents were "foreign born", whereas, for James it was only indicatedthat his father was the only one "foreign born". There is no markings asto either parents of Ann being "foreign born", which could indicate thatshe could be Thomas Sr.'s wife, and the mother to James. Thomas (11 yr.old) could be from a previous marriage of his father.
BIOGRAPHY: Thomas moved from Baraboo, Sauk county to Barron co., WI. in1872, where he lived the remainder of his life.

Next is listed his wife,Annie, who was born in WI. (as well as her parents) and was 31 yrs old atthe time (could this Annie be a daughter instead?). Next is listed his21 yr old son, Thomas (Jr.?), who was born in WI. Last listed, as partof this household, was William H., 16 yrs old born in WI. NEED TO GET ABETTER COPY OF THIS CENSUS.
BIOGRAPHY: Per his obituary: "Mr. Burke leaves three children- two sonsand a daughter, to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father." (Thisindicates that he was either a widow, or divorced, at the time of hisdeath.) "The daughter, Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, who lives at Petersborough,Canada, though telegraphed for, was unable to reach the death bed of herfather on account of dangerous illness in her own family. Mr. WilliamBurke, a son, living at Ashby, Minn., was unable to attend the funeral ofhis father" (probably due to the fact he lived about 450 miles away, which was a great distance to travel by either horseback or train). "Mr.Thomas Burke Jr., who was with his father all through his late illnesswas the only member of the family present at the funeral. Mr. Burke wasone of Barron County's oldest citizens and esteemed by all. He was asoldier of the late war, a pensioner for disabilities received therein, and a member of the Martin Watson G.A.R. Post of this city, by whichorder he was buried."
DEATH: On the Barron county Registration of Deeds it is stated thatThomas' death date (also the Date of Certificate) was Aug. 31st, 1888.Is the "Date of Certificate" the same as a "date of death"? This recordalso was the source for Thomas' "place of death". This record also wasthe source for Thomas' "place of death". This record states that Thomaswas a resident of Maple Grove, Barron co., a farmer, and he died of"Dropsy of Heart".
Thomas may have been an Irish Catholic. Need to check for church recordsof the same.
Wm. E. Rohr has copies of the 23rd. Regiment's history during the timeThomas was a part of it.
Wm. E Rohr also found a record (Nat. Arc. Film #M277 roll 25) of a 30 yr.old "Laborer" from Ireland that arrived in Boston on May 22, 1848, perthe cd on Boston Immigration Arrivals. Also found another 34 yr. old"Laborer" from Ireland that arrived on July 10, 1849 (M277 roll 30). Oneof these could be our Thomas. Need to look at these films.
SPECIAL NOTE: WM . E. ROHR HAS FOUND SEVERAL THOMAS BOURKE'S IN VARIOUSCENSUS IN WISCONSIN, FROM 1850 TO 1900. NONE OF THESE SHOW THOMAS WITH AWIFE NAMED "CARIE EELINE" (WE THINK THIS NAME SHOULD BE "CAROLINE", BUTHAVEN'T FOUND ANY RECORDS WITH THAT NAME ON THEM EITHER), NOR HAVE WEFOUND ANY CENSUS RECORDS OF A THOMAS BOURKE WITH A SON, WILLIAM HARRYBOURKE.
Carrie Eveline Rice [Parents] was born in 1844 in Merrimac, Sauk co., Wisconsin. She married Thomas Bourke on 11 Aug 1863 in Baraboo, Sauk co., Wi..
The name Carie Eveline came from the marriage register of Wm. HarryBourke. Many clerks at the time miss-spelled a lot of names. Have onlyfound a Thomas Bourke with a Margaret in Wisconsin, thus far (1999), andI'm not sure if this is our Thomas. Haven't been able to locate himafter William Harry was born (1864). There is 4 different references toThomas Bourkes in the WI. land records. One of these is in Jeffersonco., WI. It is wondered by this researcher (Wm. E. Rohr) if CarrieEveline's name was Caroline. I had a contact in WI. once that found aCaroline Rice as a child. I haven't found her yet in any census of WI.
Per information Wm. E. Rohr received from Joseph Bourke, she (Carrie) waslisted on the 1860 census of Merrimac, Sauk co., WI. as a 16 year oldCaroline.
They had the following children:
M i William Harry Bourke
Adelbert G Pettit [Parents] was born on 17 Aug 1850 in Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York. He died on 17 Mar 1950 in Woodland, Sauk co., Wi.. He was within 1 month of 100 yrs. old when he died, per Lois Massie (hisgreat grand-daughter ). He could hold up a 100 lb. grain sack in histeeth when he was almost 100 years old. He was widowed at the taking ofthe 1880 census. He was a farmer in Ironton, Sauk co., WI. in 1880.There was a Smelcer family (Asbury -24 yr. old husband, Hellen -23 yr.old wife, Florence -1 yr. old daughter, and Siss (?) -3 month olddaughter) living next door to Adelbert in 1880. This could be a brotherto Margaret Smelcer.
Marriage register for his first marriage is in Wm. E. Rohr's files.Adelbert was farming in Ironton when he got married to Margaret.
Adelbert was present when his mother died.
Per the affidavit from his father's pension file, Adelbert was living inLime Ridge, Sauk co., Wi. in January of 1897. Adelbert was 48 yrs. oldthen. Also shows his middle initial as "G".
Information about his second marriage came from the 1900 census ofIronton, WI., where he was still farming. Also from the same source camehis middle initial (looked like a "G"). Also have a copy of marriageregister showing his 2nd. marriage to Melinda Cox on Aug. 22, 1880 inWoodland, Wisc. This same register shows Adelbert's birth place, hisparents' names, and Melinda's parents' names (Reuben & Martha Cox).Adelbert and Minnie had a son, Chester in November 1881. This is thesame Chester referred to on the back of an old pictures in June Rohr'spossession.
The 1885 Wisc. state census of Ironton, Sauk co., shows Adelbert'shousehold containing 2 males and 2 females. Some of the females(daughters?) must have been visiting when census was taken.
Adelbert owned 160 acres in the northeast corner of section 30 of IrontonTownship (Sauk co., WI.) in 1936, per the 1936 Plat Book of Sauk County,WI. This property was located just west of county road "G" and a littlesouth of Ironton, about half way to Lime Ridge. His son, Chester Pettit, owned 169 acres of land adjoining Adelbert's on the west side. As of1947, Chester was listed as the owner of all of the land mentioned above, including his father's acreage. Note that there is a church, and aschool, shown on the plat map of this area for 1936. Was this churchthere when Adelbert got married to either of his two wives? If so, couldthey have been married in this church? There was also land owners in thesame close area by the name of Charles Bible, Mrs. Moses Fry, Nelson Fry,and W.H. Fry.
NEED TO CHECK THE 1860 CENSUS OF WATERTOWN, JEFFERSON COUNTY, WISC. FORHIM AND HIS PARENTS.
BIRTH: Per the death certificate of a daughter, Bertha (Pettit) Bourke,Adelbert may have been born in DK (Dakota Territory??).

Believe she was sent to Richland county to die because she had a verycontagious disease. Her death date came from a death register on her, which Wm. E. Rohr has a copy of. She was 29 years old when she died.
They had the following children:
F i Bertha Belle Pettit F ii Nellie Pettit F iii Carrie Pettit F iv Effie Pettit was born in 1879 in Wisconsin. She was sealed to her parents in the SUBMIT temple. She was baptized on 7 Jun 1995 in Seatt. She was endowed on 2 Nov 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple.

Horace Rice was born in 1820 in N.y.. He died in 1880. He married Rebecca A. in 1843 in (Sauk co.), Wi..
He was a farmer in 1860 (maybe in Merrimac, Sauk county, WI.) with realestate worth $1000 and personal property worth $400 then. NEED TO GET ACOPY OF THIS CENSUS.
Rebecca A. was born in 1817 in N.y.. She married Horace Rice in 1843 in (Sauk co.), Wi..
Found Rebecca, widowed, in 1880 "keeping house" with her son, Charles, living in the area of Township #106, Moody (county), Dakota Territory(South Dakota later) (see FHC film #1254114, page 15B). This census gaveus her middle initial and her age (63). It also indicated her father wasborn in MA. and her mother in N.Y.
She was a widow at the time of the 1880 Census.
NOTE: Also found a 21 year old WI. born Frank F. Rice as a "farmer" inthe Grand Rapids, Lamoure co., Dakota Territory area (FHC film #1254114,page 145A). Both of this Frank's parents were born in N.Y. Could he beanother son of Horace & Rebecca's?
They had the following children:
F i Carrie Eveline Rice F ii K. Rice was born in 1846 in Wi.. M iii David Rice was born in 1848 in Wi..
Found a 31 year old WI. born, David Rice living in the area of Moneycreek, Huston co., MN. in the 1880 census (FHC film #1254624, page383B). He was married and had two daughters at this time. We're notsure if this is our David as this census indicates that his father wasborn in Canada (instead of N.Y.), but it does show the mother as beingborn in N.Y.M iv Horace Rice , Jr. was born in 1851 in Wi.. M v Charles E. Rice was born in 1857 in Wi..
BIOGRAPHY: He was listed in the 1880 census of Township 106, Moody co.,Dakota Territory (FHC film #1254114, page 15B) as a 23 year old WI. born"farmer" living with his mother.

Per info given to Wm. E. Rohr by Lois Massie, Clarence and family wereliving in Daingerfield, Texas when they celebrated their 50th anniversaryin July 1967. Clarence had just recently retired from his law practicethere. Four of their children were also attorneys and members of theTexas bar. Only the son, Dr. C. D. Melinda Cox [Parents] was born on 17 Nov 1862 in Iowa. She died on 25 Jun 1939 in Woodland, Sauk co., Wi.. She was buried in 1939 in Oaks Cemetery, Woodland Township, Sauk co., Wi.. She married Adelbert G Pettit on 22 Aug 1880 in Woodland, Sauk Co, Wisconsin.
She may have went by Minnia.
Both her parents were born in Indiana. This along with marriage year isfound on 1900 census of Ironton, Sauk Co, Wisconsin. Believe they weremarried in Ironton because Adelbert was also there in the 1880 census. She was called "Minnie" in the 1880 census of Woodland, Sauk Co,Wisconsin, while still living with her parents (before her marriage toAdelbert Pettit), and the 1900 census of Ironton.
Believe her brother to be Andrew Cox. Marriage register on file withBill and June Rohr show place of marriage as Woodland, Sauk Co, Wisconsin.
This Oaks Cemetery is located in Woodland Township (on some records) inthe "V" formed by Hwy. G and the Birdd Rd., which is a little N.W. ofIronton, Sauk co., WI.
They had the following children:
David Flunel Pettit [Parents] was born on 14 Mar 1824 in N.y.. He died on 2 Sep 1896 in Page, Holt Co., Nebraska. He was buried in 1896 in Venus, Knox Co., Ne.. He married Laura Adams in 1849 in Maybe n.y..
Other marriages:Brill, Betsey Elizabeth
Had his DOB & place as about 1826 in England at one time (see 1880 censusof Ironton, Sauk co., WI. with his son, Adelbert, on it).
He farmed before and after his enlistment.
He enlisted in Co. I, 35th. Reg., WI. Infty. in Madison, Dane co., WI. onFeb. 15, 1864 to serve in the Civil War. He was a private under thecommand of Capt. Lyman B. Everdell (or Everdale). David came down withchronic diarrhea the 2nd. of June 1864 at Fort Hudson, LA. This "causeda weakness of the back and general disability caused by exposure, sleeping in a wet tent and drinking bad water". He was sent to ahospital at Memphis, Tenn., and also to De Balls Bluff, Ark. He remainedsick and reported to hospital in Madison, WI. He remained sick and wasdeclared disabled 3/4's of his time. He was honorably discharged atMadison on 14 June 1865.
He and Betsey were married by Rev. C.C. Holcomb in La Valle, Sauk co.,WI. per his pension files. David was a resident of Ironton when theymarried. Wm. Rohr has on file a copy of this pension file and a copy oftheir Marriage Register.
The 1870 census of Ironton, WISC. shows him, Betsy, and 6 children (2from his 1st. marriage, 2 from Betsy's first marriage, and 2 from hismarriage to Betsy). He was a farmer with $4400 of real estate at thetime. This census also shows David as being born in N.Y.
Per his pension file, they were living in Ironton, Sauk co., WI. , as ofMarch 9, 1880 and David was 54 yrs old.
By mid summer of 1880, David, Betsey, and their 6 children (William, theoldest child, was of Betsey's first marriage), had moved to Verdigris,Knox co., Nebraska (maybe this should read "Verdigre") per the censusthere (see FHC film #1254751, page 98C). David was listed in this censusas a 54 year old N.Y. born "farmer", whose parents were born in Canada.
He and Betsy moved to Page, Neb. sometime between 1870 and 1896. Theywere living there by about 1891 or '92 per an affidavit in his pensionfile signed by their neighbor, Robert Gray, in 1897. Per his pensionfile, they owned 1 acre of land (lots 12 -15, block 4, near Page), valuedat $50. They had a small frame house (14x20 ft.), with shed addition(10x20 ft.), and a small barn, all valued at $175. They had 2 cows ($50)and a buggy ($25). They may have moved there about 1891 per the pensionfile. (Note: It appears that they moved away from WI. after 1879 and toNebraska by 1884 per the data on Cora E. Pettit's birth and death. ) PerDavid's pension file, he died of kidney and bowel problems at 11:00 PM.
David and Betsey's adjoining neighbor in Page, Neb. was a Mr. RobertGray. He (Robert) stated that he owned the farm next to them and knewthem for the past 5 or 6 years, as of March 1897.
There is also mention of a George W. Bible and George Woolever in David'spension file. Is this the same George Bible related to Margaret Smelcer, who married Adelbert G. Pettit (David's first son)?
There remains 93 pages to his pension file in the archives, that Wm. E.Rohr does not have. He has none of David's military records either.
As of Aug. 16, 1860, when the census was taken of Spring Green, Sauk co.,Wisc., there was a Jesse Pettit (75 yrs. old, born in England) and a MaryPettit (70 yrs. old, born in N.Y. ) living there. Could these be theparents to David? (Ref: Nat. Arch. film #1429, pg 828, line 40, and line#1 of pg. 829).
In the 1880 census of Wisc. we found the following families, all head ofhouseholds born in N.Y., that could be brothers to David:
James Petitt: 39 yrs. old, and family, living in Kingston, Green Lakeco. (Ed 67, Sh 4)
Joseph Pettit: 37 yrs. old, wife & 2 kids, living in Unity Twp., Clarkco. (Ed 172, Sh 5)
Permelis " : 37 yrs. old, living in Cady Town, St. Croix co. (Ed 221,Sh 4)
