Lived in a nursing home near her daughter, Elaine DODDS, in Aurora orDenver, Colorado. The following family history was given by Lola about1992.

Robert Fred Massie and Susie Allen Hensley were united in marriage June30, 1907 at Ten Mile Baptist Church, Napoleon, KY. by Rev. Sanaers. Thatwas what my cousin, Nina, said (she is Nina Tolbert, married to JamesTolbert, living at 25 S. Race St., Springfield, OH.).

The Massies then moved to Dewitt, Dewitt county, IL., which is about 9miles east of Clinton, IL. Daddy farmed there and worked for therailroad during the winter.

Claud Leonard Massie was born at 6:50, Tues., Dec. 29, 1908 at Dewitt, IL.

Lola May Massie was born 8:30, Sunday, June 12, 1910 at Dewitt, IL.

Lethia Bernice Massie was born on Mon. Sept. 14, 1914. She only lived 4months.

Fred Raymond Massie was born at 11 A.M.. Jan. 13. 1922 at Mayville, N.D.

Edith Girtrude Massie was born at 5:30 A.M. on Wed., Feb. 20, 1924 atMayville, N.D.

Melvin Lloyd Massie was born at 4:45 A.M. Tues., Feb. 24, 1927 on thefarm at Cummings, N.D.

Robert and Susie Massie moved their family to North Dakota, nearLansford, in 1914 right after 4 month old baby, Bernice, died. I, Lola, was 5 years old. We moved to a vacant house about 3 or 4 miles from AuntLethie (Susie's oldest sister) and Uncle Rube Hedger. Aunt Lethie andUncle Rube rented a beautiful home with half a section of land, whichthey farmed. They also rented land a few miles from them. On this landwas an old house that we moved into. Under the old house were skunksthat we could hear at night. There was also an old barn that we put thehorses into. One of the horses got so sick, he had to be put into asling. We could hear him all night pawing and raving. Mama cried andcried. Daddy said "If you say so, we will move back to IL." They livedthere temporarily until they found a place to move into, the Warrenplace. We lived there during the summer and part of the winter whileDaddy built buildings (a barn, a house, double garage, and a chickenhouse) for the bank. We moved into the building, which was about 2 milesfrom a small town called Grano, N.D. This was still near Aunt Lethie andUncle Rube in the general area of Lansford. We rented this farm, whichwas a quarter mile from Lakewood Consolidated School, where we went toschool. Our old school burned down, so mama rented a room to our twoteachers, Miss Green and Mrs. Laller. They built a new large schoolbuilding.

Then mama and daddy drove a school bus pulled by horses. When daddyworked in the fields, mama would go and pick up the kids. During thistime, daddy took the job of putting in a new county road. He built thisroad with horses and scrapers.

We lived near Grano for about 4 years until we moved about two and a halfmiles southeast of Mayville, N.D. Our neighbors from IL. had alreadymoved to the nearby town of Clifford. Daddy rented the Bardon farm (alsoknown as the Heiser farm) of 320 acres. We lived there for 4 years. When daddy could not get anyone to thrash for him, he bought a bigInternational tractor and separator. Then daddy thrashed for JohnnyLarson, who got daddy other jobs thrashing. This is how we met theJensons.......when daddy thrashed for them.

Then we moved to Fargo, N.D. There daddy hauled with trucks for awhileuntil he took on a contract building another county road over nearPortland, N.D. We moved into a place 7 miles from Hillsboro, N.D. Thebuilding belonged to Enoch Olsons wife's family. Betsie Olson's uncle,an old man, stayed with us. During this time, daddy was building thecounty road and mama cooked for the Olson's thrashers, so we got freerent. Then, when daddy got enough money, he started farming over byCummings, N.D. This was about 320 acres of land. This is where daddygot so sick with heart trouble and died in Jan. 1937 at the age of 49 inthe Mayville hospital. Mama stayed on the farm one more year with Clauddoing the farming. Ingebrett Thompson and family moved in to help duringthis year.

Mama then bought a little house on 8th Ave. North in Grand Forks, N.D.She lived there a few years until she sold it and bought the little houseon 5th Ave. North.

I met Oscar Jenson when my dad was thrashing for the Jensons. We weremarried in Hillsboro, N.D. on Dec. 16, 1930. We moved in with theJensons until Grandpa Jenson built a house for us across the creek fromtheir place.
