BIOGRAPHY: Following story was from records of Joseph G. Rohr but not toosure of which of the Pedigo families it was on. It took place in theearly 1800's when the Indians were still hostile. There was one of thefamilies attacked by hostile Indians while the family was working theirfarm. They ran for the house, fighting as they went. They finally gotinside the log cabin and continued to fight off the attackers. The menyelled at somebody to bolt the door. Because of their severe wounds, themen laid there on the floor and died one by one, leaving the women andchildren all alone to continue the fight for survival. The women werescared to death, not knowing what to do. Finally, one of the womenwatching the Indians, noticed that one of them got down on the ground andput his ear to the ground. This particular Indian rose up and saidsomething to the other Indians, where upon they all hurriedly left. TheIndians had heard the sounds of hoof beats coming, which turned out to besome neighbors coming to the aid of the Pedigo families. That was allthat saved the women and children from being killed. This took place ineither Illinois or Kentucky.

BIOGRAPHY: Another story involves William Pedigo and a neighbor. Theywere riding back to the farm from town and it had gotten dark as eveningapproached. There was a full moon out. While they were riding along, awild cougar jumped out of the woods and landed on Great-Grandfather'sback. His neighbor that was with him shot the cat dead in the light ofthe moon. Their greatest fear in those days were Indians and wildanimals.

BIOGRAPHY: By 1847 William had migrated from Bowling Green, Ky. toCameron, Warren co., Ky.

BIOGRAPHY: Per one source of info: "On approximately March of 1860,William Craig Pedigo and family moved to Illinois. William Craig andElizabeth (Milligan) Pedigo left Bowling Green, Ky. in 1860 with theirfamily when Willie (Willis) was one year old. They came by boat down theBarren River, then changed to the Green River; then to the Ohio River;then to the Mississippi River. They changed boats as often as theychanged rivers. They got off the boat at Burlington, Iowa and stayed onenight, then went to Cameron, Illinois, where they were met by friends whotook them to their home. They later rented a house near Robinson'sCorners, near Gerlaw, Illinois. Upon moving to Cameron, they settled ina community called "Scotch Town", about 4 miles east of Monmouth. It wasvery "hilly". (It may have been a coal mining area)."

BIOGRAPHY: By 1860 they had settled in Kelly Township, Warren co., IL.where he was listed as a farmer.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1860 he (William) was a farm laborer in the Monmouth,Warren Co., ILL. area per the census on file with William E. Rohr. Hehad the following Pedigos living with his family then: Mary - age 22,James W. - age 19 (farm laborer), John - age 16 (farm laborer), Martha J.- age 14, and Margaret - age 12. They are probably related to WilliamCraig; maybe children from a previous marriage, if he had one. He iscertainly old enough to be their father , but Elizabeth is not old enoughto be their mother. Also, Elizabeth and William were married in 1851.The info on the first five children of his and Elizabeth's marriage camefrom this 1860 census.

BIOGRAPHY: The info on the other five children came from the 1870 censusof Cold (or Gold) Brook, Warren Co., ILL. when he was a farmer. WilliamE. Rohr has copies of both of these census' in his files.

BIOGRAPHY: William Craig died, before his father, in his 57th. year nearGalesburg, IL. His first wife, Susannah, died in her 29th. year, leaving William a widower with five children to raise between ages 2-13.He remarried the following year, to Elizabeth, and had 10 more children -fifteen children in all.

BIOGRAPHY: His grandson, Danial Boone Pedigo, later often mentioned thathe had many "double cousins" because of these marriages. This oldgentleman was surely photographed during his lifetime, and it is likely acopy exists within the family archives of a descendant somewhere, butnone has been located.
