Champe, John or John Champ, Phebe, W4153, BLW #948-100, Cont Line (VA) Sol was a native of Loudoun Cty, VA and lived there at enl and after the war moved to Hampshire Co Va. Sol m Phebe _ in July 1782 and sol died about 1798 while on a tour of the western country near Morgantown on the Monongahela, wid was a res of Franklin Cty, OH in 1818 aged nearly 60, wid was allowed a pension by Special Act of congress 7 Jul 1838 and she was still a res of Franklin Cty, OH Chidren shown were Elanor who m Jacob Hartman, Amelia who m William Keyes, Susannah who m David or Daniel Wilfong of Ross Cty OH, William of PIckaway Cty, OH, Mary of Pickaway Cty, OH and was referred to later as Mary Keyes, John of Franklin Co, OH, Nathanial of Detroit MI and was born in Hampshire Co, VA and served in the war of 1812. In 1847 surviving children were: William of Columbus, OH, Nathanial of Detroit, MI John res not shown. In 1847 the heir of sol's 4 dec'd daughters were mentioned but only George W Wilfong was named.
John Champe (1752-98) enlisted in Lee's cavalry legion and, 1780, volunteered to desert, hoping to capture Arnold in New York. He was able to send valuable information to the Commander-in-Chief, who subsequently gave him an honorable discharge from the army, fearing he would be hanged as a spy if captured. He was born in Loudoun County, Va.; died in Kentucky.
