wife the use of one-fifth thereof during her life, as above mentioned."
To daughter, Rebeckah, the account due by her deceased husband, Jasper
Smith, and one negro named Sarah, loaned her husband in North Carolina.
Executors: Wife, William Moore of Rock Creek, in Wilkes County. Appraisers:
Basil Brawner, William Hallen and James Tuttel. (Note: James Meredith was the
first man to be executed in Elbert County). Will of Jasper Smith. Executed December 1, 1790. Recorded May 19,
1791. Value of estate: P., 213; S., 8; D., 0. Provisions: To wife, Rebeckah,
one negro wench named Lucy during her life and at her death to be equally
divided among those children she had by me, and her son, Thos."
Remainder of estate to go to wife for life and to children, share and share
alike, upon her death. Daughters, Betsy and Sally, and step-son, Thomas,
given 15 pounds in property when they become of age or marry. Executors:

Dionysius Oliver came from Virginia in about 1776. He had fought at
King's Mountain. By 1784, he received 650, 3,650, and 950 acres of land, a
total of 5,250 acres, in Wilkes County. He named the town Petersburg for the
town in Virginia where he was born in 1735. He began selling lots in
Petersburg in 1786. To his son, John Oliver, he sold all outlying lands he
had between the Broad and Savannah Rivers. John bought and sold lots and
engaged in the merchantile business. When he died in 1816, John had a large
plantation and 64 slaves. His father, Dionysius Oliver sired 11 children. William McIntosh Jr., of Chatham Co., to Dionysius Oliver of Wilkes Co.,
100 acres on south side of Broad river near its confluence with Savannah
river, adj. Robt. Middleton and Samuel Scott, the confiscated land of Thos.

b. 1 Mar 1760 St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, VA – d. 1838 Elbert Co.
GA. Son of Zachariah Butler, he married Elizabeth Fanning. Patrick Butler
served 15 months with Virginia Troops under Captain Brown in 1781. He was
discharged and sent home after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. He later
fought in the Battle of Camden. Patrick was awarded a land grant in Wilkes
County Georgia; headright for self and four in family. (Book B, page 189,
Wilkes County Records). He applied for a pension on 21 January, 1833 [Pension
#S-31587), and the last payment was made 1838-1839. He and Zachariah are
buried beside each other near Fortsonia, Georgia. |
