JAMES S. GLOVER was born 1790 in Broad
River, Elbert, Georgia, and died December 20, 1871 in New Hope, Madison,
Alabama. He married (1) ELIZABETH GREEN February 20, 1816 in Madison County,
Alabama, daughter of BURKETT GREEN and REBECCA. She was born in Elbert,
Georgia, and died before 1822 in Owens Cross Roads, Madison, Alabama. He
married (2) MATILDA GREEN May 07, 1822 in Huntsville, Madison, Alabama,
daughter of BURKETT GREEN and REBECCA with Ezekiel CRAFT performing the
ceremony. She was born 1798 in Georgia, and died after 1880 in Madison County,
Alabama.
James S. Glover was 21 years of age when
he entered the service, War of 1812, at Fort Hawkins, Georgia. He was described
in Claim of Widow for Service Pension, dated 31 May 1878, as being a farmer,
blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was a
Private in company commanded by Captain Zachariah Smith in the Regiment of foot
Infantry commanded by Col. Milton Harris in the War with the Creek Indians. He
volunteered at Elbert County, Georgia, on or about the 25th day of August 1813
for a term of six months, and was honorably discharged at Fort Hawkins,
Georgia, on the ___ day of September 1813, by the ___ rolls of said company,
never having received a discharge and having another man to serve out the
balance of his time as he was then leaving for Alabama. He made
Declaration in Madison County, AL, on 2 Nov. 1850, signing with an
"X", his mark.
Bounty Land Claim of James Glover is
dated 4 Dec. 1850, and Glover requested that the Commissioner of Pensions
forward his Warrant (Land) to Bradford & Farris, General Land Agents, who
would transmit the warrant to Glover. He filed form for additional Bounty Land
under Act of 1855, on 31 March 1855. He states under Act of 28 Sept. 1850, he
had received a land warrant for 40 acres, No. 16,084, for his service.
James Glover, aged 88 years, resident of
Madison County, AL, made declaration for pension as a soldier of the War of
1812, on 17 April 1871. On page 1 of this declaration, he states that his
wife's name is Matilda Green, that he married her in Madison County on the 7th
day of May A. D. 1816. This date is incorrect, as he married Matilda in 1822.

Cover Sheet from Treasury Department,
Third Auditor's Office, dated 9 Oct. 1871, reveals that Glover's substitute was
Jones Malone who served from 8 Oct. 1813 to 3 March 1814.
Matilda Glover, widow of James Glover,
filed for Widows' Pension on 31 May 1878. She was 79 years of age, residing in
Madison County, AL. Stated that she married James Glover in Madison County, AL,
on the 7th day of May 1822, and that she had not remarried after his death. She
gave as her residence New Hope, AL.
James S. Glover died at his home in
Madison County, AL, on 20 Dec. 1871.
Matilda Glover is named on list of
pensioners dated 2-28-1884, as widow of 1812 living in New Hope, AL, $8.00.
Marriages to (1) Elizabeth Green and (2)
Matilda Green, sisters, daughters of Rebecca and Burkett Green.
Two children, Jarusha and Retha Glover,
were born to the first marriage. In 1833 these children are mentioned in the
will of their grandfather, Burkett Green, as the children of his deceased
daughter, Elizabeth Glover. Date of her death is not known.
Matilda Green Glover, second wife, is
named in the will of her father, Burkett Green. Another daughter of Burkett and
Rebecca Green, Lucinda Green, married Ezekiel Craft, Jr., son of Ezekiel Craft,
Sr., and a brother of Jane Ann Craft who married Silas M. Glover, brother of
James S. Glover.
