Thanks to the oft told tale of the courthouse fire, the origins of John Newell are difficult to trace.
Equally difficult to
document is the relationship of the Newells found in Warren County, North Carolina who must related, but no proof can be found. The
individuals whose relationship cannot be determined are:
- Matthew L. Newell. He married Olive Capps on Dec. 15, 1804 in
Warren County, NC. The bondsman was James Capps, and the witness was M. Duke Johnson.
- Peter Newell. He married Susannah Hail on
November 9, 1795 in Warren County. The bondsman was David H. Newell.
- Thomas Newell. He married Elisabeth Daniel on November 6,
1782 in Warren County. The bondsman was John Newell, and the witness was M. Duke Johnson.
- Mary Newell. She married James E.
Tomlinson on June 7, 1816 in Warren County.
Another mystery man is
William Newell. He was a witness to a July 25, 1759
land transaction in Brunswick County, Virginia in which John Newell purchased land from Lucas Powell. William's relationship to John is
unknown, but he could have been closely related.
Please email Bruce Compton if you can show a relationship between any of the
above and John Newell.
