1. John1 Newell was born in Virginia. John died before
November 1795 in Warren Co., North Carolina.(1)
John married Lucy Hyde before August 21, 1759.(2) Lucy was born in Virginia. Lucy was the daughter of David Hyde and
Mary. She died after January 27, 1792.
He was listed on a deed as a witness December 11, 1751 in Surry Co., Virginia.(3) John Newell may have been living in Prince George County, Virginia at the time.
"11 Dec 1751.... Joseph Glover and wife, Elizabeth Glover, of Martins Brandon Parish in Prince George County to John Barnes
of the same for 40 pounds current money.... 200 acres in the fork of Poplar Swamp and bounded by the Long Branch."
He bought property from Michal Casley December 17, 1754 in Surry Co., Virginia.(4)
"17 Dec 1754.... Michal Casley and his mother, Elizabeth Atkinson, of Surry County to John
Newell of Prince George County for 86 pounds current money.... 100 acres on south side of Savages Run of the head of upper Chipoakes Creek
and bounded by Mr. William Short, Richard Jones and Mr. Ephraim Baird."
He bought property from Lucas Powell on July 23, 1759 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.(5) Lucas Powell was of Dinwiddie County, and John Newell was of Sussex County at the time of this
event.
He sold property to Daniel Spence August 21, 1759 in Surry Co., Virginia.(6) This land transaction is the earliest record found that describes Lucy as the wife of John
Newell.
He bought property from Lucas Powell July 23, 1760 in Northampton Co., North Carolina.(7) At the time of this conveyance, John Newell was living in Sussex County,
Virginia, and Lucas Powell was of Dinwiddie County, Virginia.
He sold property to David Hyde on February 6, 1764 in Northampton Co., North Carolina.(8) At the time of this conveyance, John Newell was of Brunswick County, Virginia,
and David Hyde was of Northampton County, North Carolina.
He bought property from Lucas Powell July 5, 1764 in Northampton Co., North Carolina.(9) At the time of this conveyance, John Newell was of Brunswick County, Virginia,
and Lucas Powell was of James City County, Virginia.
He sold property to James Allen Jr. June 29, 1767 in Northampton Co., North Carolina.(10) John Newell & his wife Lucy were of Northampton County, North Carolina at
the time of this event.
John Newell was a buyer at the account of sale of the estate of David Hyde on June 14, 1785 in Northampton Co., North
Carolina.(11) A North Carolina state census
conducted in February, 1786, listed John Newell as the head of a household in Warren County. He was enumerated in Jordan Harris'
district.(12) The household was enumerated as follows:
- 2 white males aged 21-60
- 3 white males under 21 or above 60
- 4 white females, all ages
- 8
blacks aged 12-50
- 2 blacks under 12 or over 50
He made a will on January 27, 1792 in Warren Co., North Carolina.(13) Here is the text of John Newell's will:
In the name of God Amen, I, John,
Newell Senr. of Warren County, State of No. Carolina being weaken body but of sound mind & memory thanks to almighty God for the same
calling to mind the mortality of the body that it is appointed for man once to dye & do nominate this my last will and testament
[illegible]. I bequeath my soul to God who gave it me or into the hand of a sure [illegible].... my body to the dust its original in sure
and certain hopes of this resurrection of eternal life [illegible] Jesus Christ our Lord. As for my worldly goods which God has graciously
given me, after my just worldly debts are paid I dispose of in manner and form as follows: Item. I lend to my loving wife Lucy during her
natural life the land and plantation whereon Jno. Newell will with all the stock of hoggs, cattle, sheep one lay horse called Dick, a sorrel
mare called Sellomy, a blk colt called Pinck (?), a negro fellow named Soloman, a negro woman named Old Phillis, a negro woman named Young
Phillis, together with the house hold & kitchen furniture & plantation tools. Item. I give to my daughter Elizabeth Robertson one negro we
named Jenny, one feather bed & furniture & one horse called Warren, saddle & bridle, two cows, calves & ewes & lambs. Item. I give to my
son William Newell the land & plantation whereon he now lives which land I purchased of Rick Hamblet lying on the south side of Cattle
Pershing Creek ajoining Thos. Persons upper line containing 179 acres (more or less), one negro woman named Silvia, one feather bed &
furniture, two cows & calves, one dark bay mare, saddle & bridle, one yoke of oxen, two ewes & lambs. Item. I lend to my daughter Rebekah
Myrick during her natural life one negro woman named with her increase, one bay mare, saddle & bridle, two cows & calves, two ewes & lambs,
one feather bed & furniture, one square walnut table, one chest and half a dozen walnut turned chairs. Now if my daughter Rebekah should die
before her youngest child comes of lawful age, my desire is that the above loan be sold by my executors and the money put on interest till
her youngest child comes of lawful age, and the money to be equally divided among all her children. Item. I give to my son John Newel and
to his heirs forever the land & plantation whereon he now lives, which land I purchased of Henry Clark lying on the south side of Bern Creek
containing 200 acres, be the same more or less, together with one negroe fellow named Liberty, one bay mare, saddle & bridle, one feather
bed & furniture, three cows & calves, one yoke of stears, two ewes & lambs. Item. I give to my son Edward Newel the land and plantation
which I purchased of Chamberlain & John Hudson lying on the south side of Little Fishing Creek above and joining the land which I gave to my
son William containing 200 acres, be the same more or less, together with one negroe boy named Bob, one sorrel mare, saddle & bridle, one
feather bed & furniture, two cows & calves & two ewes & lambs, one sow & pig, one yoke of stears & eighteen pounds of Virginia money in
cash. Item. I give to my son David Hyde Newel after the decease of his mother the land plantation whereon I now live lying on the north
side of Little Fishing Creek joining Sam'l Taylor on the lower and Thomas Borough on the upper side containing acres be the same, more or
less, together with one negroe boy named Solomon, one sorrel colt, saddle & bridle, one feather bed & furniture, two cows & calves, two ewes
& lambs, one yoke of small stears & one sow & pigs. Item. I give to my daughter Sally Newel one negroe girl named Fanny and one negroe boy
child named Jabob, together with one bay colt, saddle & bridle, one feather bed and furniture, two cows & calves, two ewes & lambs. Item.
I give to my daughter Polly Hyde Newel after the decease of her mother one negroe woman named Phila (?) and the first child which she has
after my decease, together with one feather bed and furniture, one bay colt, saddle & bridle, two cows & calves, two ewes and lambs. Item.
I will that my waggon and three bigert horses & one sorrel mare and filly be sold to pay my just debts, and if the money arising from the
sale of the waggon & horses over pays my debts, the over plus together with all the property which I have lent to my wife after her decease
except those things with above I order to be sold, the money & the money equally divided among all my children except Reb Myrick, her part
to be divided among her children as above. I further do nominate & appoint my wife Lucy Newell & my sons Wm. & Jno. Newell exrs. of this my
last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 27th day of Jany, Anno Dom 1792. John Newell Senr.

Warren County, Feby Court, 1796. J. Newell proved
this last will & test of Jno. Newell, deceased, whereupon letters testamentary was granted to the exrs herein named who qualify accordingly,
& the sd will is ordered to be recorded.
John's will was presented in court November 1795 in Warren Co., North Carolina. John Newell, Jr. and Edward Newell proved the
will.(14) John Newell Jr. was qualified as executor
of the will of John Newell in February 1796 in Warren Co., North Carolina.(15) His estate was inventoried May 1796 in Warren Co., North Carolina. John
Newell Jr. returned the inventory.(16) Land which
John Newell lent his daughter Rebecca Myrick was ordered sold May 1813 in Warren Co., North Carolina.(17) An administrative account took place May 29, 1821 in Warren Co., North
Carolina.(18)

August 1797.(20) This marriage is proved in a Warren
County, North Carolina guardian account which says that "Sterling Harwell filed a gdn. account for Elizabeth Long, noting that she had
married John Newell, August Ct., 1797."
