     Tjerck Claeszen De Witt was born in 1620 at Netherlands. He was the son of Claes De Witt. Tjerck Claeszen De Witt married Barbara Andriessen on 24 April 1656 at New Amsterdam (NYC), NY. When the English took possession of Kingston, NY in 1667, Therck reisted and was beaten and imprisoned by troops under Captain Broadhead. He owned two sloops, one of which had a fifty foot keel. His daughter, Jannetje was taken captive by indians in their attack in 1663 but she was later recovered. Tjerck Claeszen De Witt died on 17 February 1700 at Kingston, Ulster Co., NY.

Peter DeWitt was a prominent lawyer in New York City and his firm at 45 Nassau Street passed through four generations of his family until 1916.
