James Tomonto Sr. was also known as Vincenzo Tramonte There was an evolution of the way James Tomonto's name was spelled. It is believed that his name was Vincenzo Tramonte when he arrived in the US on May 3, 1904. In the 1910 census it was spelled Tromonti. In the 1918 Draft Registration it was spelled Tamonto and in the 1930 census it was Tomonto.

The clue was a 1938 map of Greenwich, Ct which listed the property under the name of Tramonte. A warrantee deed was found which was originally executed on October 21, 1907 and the granter was Mary Brown. The deed was not filed in Greenwich until 25 years later (April 6, 1932). The property was traced to a Edwin S. Brown in 1890. He was born on 30 March 1873 at Bovino, Foggia, Puglia, Italy. There is a conflict between the date of birth between the death certificate and the WW 1 Draft Registration Record. The latter indicated the date of birth is March 28, 1873. Since this date came from James himself, I would assume that is correct.

The Death Certificate had a birth date of March 27, 1878. The Record of births (source 51) indicated that he was born on March 30, 1873 at home in Bovino.

The Draft Registration card indicated he was born in the Village of Bovino, Provence of Paggla, Italy. It is believed that these should be Village of Bovino, Provence of Puglia. This village is about 24 km SSW of Foggia. Puglia is also known as the Provence of Apulia.2,3,4
He was the son of Giuseppe Tramonte and Giochinea Di Daro (?).1 James Tomonto Sr. married Lucera Seve on 25 August 1890 at Bovino, Foggia, Puglia, Italy.1 He married Maria Michela Muscillo at Bovino, Foggia, Puglia, Italy, on 4 June 1902.1 James Tomonto Sr. emigrated on 20 April 1904 from Naples, Italy. The Ellis Island records indicate that Vincenzo Tramonte emigrated on the Nord America on April 20, 1904 and arrived in New York on May 3, 1904. The records show him to be 31 and married at that time and born in Bovino, Italy. There were nine men from Bovino on that ship and all were going to stay with their brothers at 216 Mulberry St., NY.5 He lived at 1194 King street, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT; Vincenzo bought that property on October 21, 1907 from Mary Brown (wife of Edwin S. Brown) on a 25 year note. The deed was filed in Greenwich on April 6, 1932. He appeared on the census of 1910 at King St, Rye Town, Westchester Co., NY. The name appears to be Tromonti. Tony, Millicent and James were in the home. Parents gave their ages as 40. This would support a 1870 birth for both of them. In addition they indicated that all three children were born in New York which is questionable.6 He appeared on the census of 4 April 1930 at 1194 King Street, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT. In the 20 years between the 1910 and 1930 census, the parents and Millicent only aged 9 years. Anthony and James had left home leaving only the four daughters.7 He died on 9 October 1946 at Home, 1194 King Street, Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT, at age 73.8 He was buried on 12 October 1946 at US 1 and I 287, Port Chester, Fairfield Co., CT. He is buried with his second wife at St. Mary's, Section H, Range 7, sites 15, 16. This is about 50 feet in front of the sales office.9

Tomonto/Tramonte Family

?, #1388
The Tramonte family originated in the region of Puglia or Apulia , the southernmost region of Italy in the province of Foggia. Foggia was often called "The Capitanata" from the title of the governing officer under the Byzantine Emperor. The Provence has three zones or districts: the Apulia, the Sub-Apennine and the Gargano. The Tramonte family lived in the Sub- Appennine zone in the city of Bovino famous for its' Cathedral and the romantic Ducal Castle. It is about 380 km southeast from Rome on the Adratic Sea. Bovino is in the heart of a rich agricultural centere, in a vast plain between the rivers Cervaro and Celone.
Puglia is a region of faith and myths. The legends, the traditions, the superstitutions are still alive among the people who live its' small villages. It was the home of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina from the Cappician Monastry of Sen Giovanni Rotondo.
The first known members of the line were Guiseppe Tramonte, a farmer near Bovino and Anthony Muscillo, a shepherd in the same area. Guiseppe was the father of my Grandfather and Anthony Muscillo the father of my Grandmother.
Vincenzo Tramonte later known as James Tomonto, Sr. was married twice. His first wife had a son (Anthony) but died in childbirth delivering Mildred Tomonto. Vincenzo then married Maria Michela Muscillo who was my fathers' mother..
There is a family legend that my Grandfather, James Tomonto, Sr., was in the Italian Army and the keeper of the polo ponies for the national team. As the story goes, a wealthy American business man hired him and brought him to the US to take care of his polo stock. Since he became a widower with two children just before leaving for the US, the village decided he needed to have a wife. He supposidly married his first wifes' best friend. Is this true? I don't know. There is the fact that he left Italy 22 months after marrying Michela Musillo and that he settled on seven acres on King Street in Greenwich, Ct. adjacent to the property of Edwin Brown for whom he worked for 42 years.
The house and property was placed on the market in January 2004 by the two surviving daughters of James Tomonto Sr.
