Sherry derives
from the Irish word Searraigh, which is the
possessive form of Searrach.
Searrach is a young horse
or foal.

In the course of tracing my family's history, I've learned this about Sherrys:
The 1880 U.S. census data at familysearch.com show 514 Sherrys (or McSherrys) with Irish births, 69 Canadians, 34 English, 8 Scots, 4 Welsh, 43 Germans, 15 French, 8 Italians, 4 Swiss, 1 Belgian, 1 Pole/German. This counts multiple members of the same family.
1930 U.S. census data (head of household) at ancestry.com has 131 Sherrys with Irish births, 41 Canadians, 25 English, 10 Scots, 5 Germans, 5 Italians, 4 Swiss, 4 Austrians, 2 French, 1 Belgian. I did not look carefully; some may be widows of men named Sherry.
Some Sherrys at the Facebook group "No really tho...Sherry is my LAST name!" report that their Russian Jewish ancestors' names had been shortened from Shereshevsky. Two professional baseball players during the late 1950s/1960s, Norm and Larry Sherry were Jewish.
