Walter was born at 'the Willows', Nanango and grew up on his parents' farm near Kingaroy. Their first son, Richard, had died at birth so Walter was treated as first-born and was very close to his father. His place on the family tree can be seen at the following link to my family tree.
He was made to leave school at twelve to help on the farm and at fourteen went droving during a drought. Because of poor food and not being able to care for his teeth properly, Walter had to have false teeth by the time he was eighteen and he always had a bad back from sitting long hours in the saddle.
Yolande Loosemore writes that Walter was quiet and shy. Yolande has written some stories involving Walter: how he met Thelma Nissen and other experiences of their life in Kingaroy.
He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 25 Nov 1943 and served until his retirement on 25 February 1959 (his 55th birthday). He did not adjust well to life after the RAAF, and died on 22 May 1959.
