Biography of George and Sarah Hindle
George was a carpenter, like his father James. His place on the family tree can be seen at the following link to my family tree.
George and Sarah Jane Holt married at Accrington, Lancashire (where Sarah was born), when George was 22 (1876/77) and Sarah was about 26. They were Baptists. They must have decided to emigrate to Australia in the 1880s and George left first, arriving around 1883. George may have needed a better climate because he had tuberculosis.
After working in the cotton mills or as a housekeeper in Lancashire, England, Sarah emigrated to Australia in 1885. She came listed as a single woman (31) (but she may actually have been 38) with George (her son) (7), Clara (5) and Eleanor (1) on the 'Gulf of Mexico', as an assisted immigrant. They arrived in Sydney on 24 March 1885 from Plymouth with 581 other immigrants after a six-month voyage. Nellie was listed as a housekeeper, Baptist, and could read and write.
They stayed in New South Wales for three years and then moved to Victoria for some 20 years, living at Geelong and in the Gippsland region.
After George died, Sarah came to live with Nellie and Edward in Queensland. Sarah had a good voice and sang in a choir. She died of 'senility and cardiac failure' at Chinchilla Public Hospital (at the age of 87 years 11 months) when staying with Janie, and was buried in the Chinchilla cemetery.
George was responsible for the building of these two houses at Geelong. He may be the building contractor. The photos have been handed down in the family.
