According to current scholarly research, Richard Norman's antecedents in England are unknown. Leslie Mahler places him probably of Charminster, DOR, on the basis of his children's baptisms there. [TAG 77:102 Apr 2002] He further notes [footnote on same page]
[...] Another recent account of this family can be found in Burton W. Spear, ed., Search for the passengers of the Mary & John 1630, 18: West Country Ancestries, 1620-1643 (Toledo, Ohio, 1992), 102-3, which uses (with a note of caution) the poorest available source: Raymon Meyers Tingley, Some Ancestral Lines... (Rutland, VT, 1935), 256-58. Tingley has Richard as the son of a John Fryeth alias Norman of Ipswich, Suffolk, which is a completely different part of England [[from Dorchester, Richard's apparent origin and where his children were baptized]]. Tingley also gave Richard a non-existant son named William.
Not only did Tingley add a son William, he apparantly missed out daughters Elizabeth and Florence. It is my guess that Tingley based Richard the Immigrant's supposed parentage on a documented 1603 suit brought by one Richard Freyeth alias Norman vs Agnes Fryeth alias Norman, widow of John Fryeth alias Norman of Ipswich, co. Suffolk, and her daughter Elizabeth, wife of Edmund Greenleaf. [NEHGR 69:358 Oct 1915] Tingley states [Tingley, p.256] "It is supposed that he [the immigrant] was the Richard Fryeth alias Norman who [brought this suit], but no proof has been found" [emphasis mine] -- forgetting that this was the only connection to the Fryeth alias Norman group.
