The identity of William Cheney's wife is a problem.
Often reported (without attribution) as being one Margaret Cole
(or Cule or Mason),
daughter of William Cole and Elizabeth Deards.
this is unlikely.
The dates don't work.
William Cole and Elizabeth Deards were apparently
born respectively in 1546 and 1550, and married in 1570,
which would make them unlikely to have produced a child in 1604,
the birth date usually given for Margaret.
That date, 1604, is consistent with the birth date
of her purported husband, William Cheney, in 1598/99.
If William's wife was indeed a Cole,
she would likely have been of the next generation after
that of William and Elizabeth.
