Robert "the Strong", Marquis of Neustria, (a/k/a Duke Robert of France, Rutpert IV of Neustria, Graf von Paris, Robert "der Tapfere"), is the earliest male ancestor of the Capetian Dynasty known with any degree of certainty.

He succeeded in checking the depredations of the Northmen, who were laying waste the settlements near the Loire, by his bold and inspiring military leadership.

Austrasia: The eastern kingdom of the Franks in the times of the Merovingians and the Carolingians (6°-9° centuries). (cf Neustria)
Neustria: The western kingdom of the Franks. Neustria extended from the mouth of the Shelde to the Loire; later it was restricted to the region between the Seine and the Loire. The inhabitants were mainly of Romance extraction. After the treaty of Verdun (843), it developed into the Kingdom of France.
