                             Plantagenet

The name was derived from the Geoffrey of Anjou, Count of Anjous', wearing a branch of broom plant in his cap, (plante de genet) when he was on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The name was used after the 1300's

We first begin our look into OUR Plantagenet family at the beginning as I know it with:

1 William The Conqueror  b 1027 Norman  d 1087 England
Note:  William invaded England defeating the English forces in the Battle of Hastings in Oct.
1066. He became King of England on Christmas Day 1066 and ruled until his death in 1087.
He appointed the Norman nobles to high positions and divided the land among  Norman's, forcing most Anglo-Saxons to become servants. William had England surveyed to determine how much property there was in England and who owned it. This survey became known as Doomsday Book.  It is claimed that the ancestral lineage of William also is directly traceable to Charlemagne and then on back to Julius Caesar.

    1 Henry b 1070 Yorkshire, England  d  1135 England

2 Henry I
Note: Henry I was King of England from 1100-1135

    married Saint Mathilda 1110 England
Mathilda was the daughter of the King of Scotland, Malcolm III (1024-1093) and his 2nd wife St. Margaret, Queen of England and Scotland. Malcolm III's father was King Duncan of Scotland of whom William Shakespeare wrote in "MacBeth". Margaret is a descendant of Alfred the Great who was King of England (871-899). St. Margaret's ancestors were all early Angle Kings, extending back to King Ingild, ancestor of Alfred the Great.

PLANTAGENET COAT OF ARMS

3 Mathilda of England
married Geoffrey V of Anjou  Plantagenet in 1132 in England
Note: Geoffrey became Count of Anjou, Maine, and Touraine in 1129. His father was Fulk V (1092-1144), Count of Anjou and King of Jerusalem. Fulk V is a lineal descendant of Pepin, the King of Lombardy and Italy. This Pepin was the son of Charlemagne (721-814), "Emperor of the West" and was the gr. grandson of Charles Martel (688-741). Some genealogists claim that the
lineal ancestry is easily traceable from here to Julius Caesar, 1st of Caesar's who lived c300 B.C.
In the line between Caesar and Clovis stands the name of King Colius II of Britain whose name
has been preserved in "Mother Goose Tales" as "Old King Cole".
