marched to GuilfordCourt House.I was in the heat of that battle.
My Captain was killed and Benj. Rice succeeded his.I
was promoted to ensign"

Canyon, Californiain 1860, after travelingaround the Horn in 1852. Thomas Mitchell
raised cattle,thoroughbredtrotting horses and wasat one time the largest shipper of honey
in Los Angeles Countyshipping two freight car loadsannually. The first home of Thomas
and Martha Mitchellalso became the first school in thevalley. Later they gave land
to the school district toform a school district for all the childrencoming to the Valley.
