David McCrossen M.D.

The following Obituary of My Great Great Grandfather was given to me by Ruth Mills.

David McCrossen was born in Ontario county, N.Y., Nov. 13, 1808, died June 8, 1892. He was a son of James McCrossen of Ireland, and Deborah Adams of N.Y. He had one brother and two sisters, John W. McCrossen and Mrs. Wm. Pursell, of N. Y., Mrs. Isaac Hazen, of Grand Rapids, deceased. He studied medicine with Dr. Arnold Grey at Springwater, N. Y., attended lectures at Castleton, VT., was admitted to practice in 1829 in Ontairo (sic) county N. Y., which avocation he pursued during his active life.


On June 2nd, 1831 he was married to his first wife Amanda Short four children were born to them, Mrs. Wm. Winfield, of Kansas, Mrs. James Bannister of this place and Phillip J. and Ransom D. of Rochester, N. Y. On Sept. 25th, 1851 he was married to his second wife Mary L. Waite, one daughter, Dora L. was born to them. In 1854 he removed with wife and child to this State. He settled in Berlin, St. Clair County, where he remained twelve years. He then came to Armada where he remained until the spring of 1890 following his profession and receiving a good patronage. While here he adopted a son Benj. R. McCrossen who is now teaching near Grand Rapids, and is a very promising young man. Two years ago, when in his 82nd, year he left his home here, friends and acquaintances of many years, and removed with his wife to Grand Rapids, that they might enjoy the society and receive the care of the children who had preceded them there.


His last sickness was long and painful all of which he bore very patiently. He possessed many good qualities. Of him it is truly said that "those who knew him most loved him best." His remains were brought here for internment, the funeral services being held in the M. E. Church, Rev. S. E. Warren officiating.
