1859
He was born,14 Dec.1859 in Vernon Township,N.J.His parents were Henry
Silas Utter and Julia Card,who were "both of several generations in N.J."
1862/63-1875
When he was old enough,he worked on his father's farm during the summer
months.While his siblings were working, he could often be found reading
a book under a tree, instead of doing his chores.He attended the district
schools until he was sixteen,when he passed a teacher's exam and received
a certificate to teach.
1875-1878
He taught school for three years in New Jersey. It was during this
time that he married Marie E. Banta on13 Oct 1877.
1879-1880
A daughter Anna was born to Sylvester and Marie in1879 .He met a Dr.M.W.Gillson
of Paterson,who hired him as a helper in his office.This experience changed
his life.
1881
At age twenty-two,he entered New York University Medical School,where
he specialized in dermatology.He interned under Professor Whitehouse of
Cornell University.
1885
Sylvester received his medical degree from New York University.
1885-1888
He returned to the northwest area of N.J. and was actively engaged
in the practice of medicine in West Milford,Passaic Co.His wife,Maria died
on 29 Jan.1888 and is buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Oak
Ridge.N.J.
1888-1892
Sylvester moved on to Woodport,Morris Co.,where he met Elizabeth Clark
of Paterson.They were married in 1889. Their first daughter,Elizabeth was
born in 1892.It was during this same year that he decided to run on the
Republican ticket for the State Legislature from the Second District of
Woodport.Like so many of his ventures, he was successful in his campaign
and won handily.
1894
Time to move on again,so he packed up his family and moved his medical
practice to 81 Rea Ave.,Hawthorne,N.J.,where a second daughter Jessie was
born on June 23,1894.
1895 -1920
Dr. Utter served as a dermatologist at St.Joseph's Hospital and at
Barnert Hospital,both in Paterson.He was a member of the Passaic Co.,the
N.J. and the American Medical Societies.He was very active in the political
affairs of Hawthorne during these years,as well.
1898
Through his own personal efforts and expense,he went to Trenton to
argue for independence of Hawthorne and North Paterson as a borough.Both
towns were a part of Manchester Township at the time. He accomplished his
mission and called the new borough,Hawthorne.He was elected its first mayor
in 1898.
1998-Centennial

1922
Sylvester remained active in borough affairs and was the Commissioner
of Finance at the time of his death at Goffle Hill Rd. in1922.His wife
Elizabeth pre-deceased him in 1915.
