For more than fifty
years, William Utter
has been pursued by his descendants. Two records have been found; his marriage
to Jane Russell,4
Nov.1771,in the Church of Christ in Salem,Westchester Co.N.Y.(now Lewisboro)
and his tombstone record in Cherry Ridge, N.J.The inscription implies that
he died in 1826 and that he served in the Revolutionary War,as well as
the War of 1812.The lingering problem is that we are not sure that these
are one and the same person.
A list of their
children is included in an Elsie McKellips genealogical study done in 1920-1930
and is reprinted as an insert found in the book"Nicholas Utter and a few
of his Descendants"by Katherine Utter Waterman. No source for the list is
cited, but William and Jane have been virtually adopted by all of us who
descend from one of their offspring, listed below.
We are still looking, however.
Joseph - b.1776-N.Y.? - d.Oct. 1849,West Milford,N.J.

One of the most
rewarding aspects of our activities, in the pursuit of information about
our ancestors, has been the discovery of several of Don Gray's distant
cousins. We have met many of them on the internet as we searched the databases, bulletin
boards and mailing lists. We have exchanged valuable information and have
become good friends.
Below we list a
few of them, all of whom descend from one of the seven siblings as noted, above.Since
Don Gray descends from Silas,those
listed below are his cousins.
Jean Pitts of Texas

Jen Carey of Vermont

Bob Gregory of New
Jersey - from Rebecca
Virginia Chardavoyne
Corwin of Virginia - from Silas
Jody Wilson of Mississippi-fromJohn

frequent visitors and fellow searchers, but there are others and we thank

The following information is an update of our findings
concerning the family of William and
Jane
Utter as of Feb.10 2001.According to the Waterman book on pages
26 and 27,a Nicholas Utter, Jr. was
born in Westerley, R.I.,circa 1677.There are three sons on record:
1.Joseph - b.circa,1704 ; d.circa,1730.
He was apprenticed to a John Hill on March7,1714-15, by the Westerly Council
because his father had "left town".His mother may have died.
2 William - b.-1707 -1715.
He was known as the "heir of Joseph",because Joseph left his property in
Rhode Island to William, when he died in 1730.William may have remained
there for the rest of his life.William requested that Capt.Edward Greenman
be his guardian on 28 Apr1729.This may have been his uncle.
3. Josiah - b.circa,1716 - 1729. He
was made a ward of Capt.Greenman on 2May1729.He married Elizabeth
Arnold on 27May1736 in New Shoreham,R.I. A Josiah

Below is a section of the Vernon Township, N.J. Death Record from June,1854 to June,1855.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------![]()
The fourth line from the top, reads:
Oct 26,1854 Abija Utter,male.-married-age67-farmer William & Jane Utter
The ditto marks indicate that both his birth and death were in New Jersey. This is the first real evidence that William and Jane Utter are the parents of Abijah, one
of the siblings listed in the Waterman book and above.
The parents of Silas and Joseph are not recorded on their death records. We are still
searching for the records of the others.
