A Satellite Picture of Long Island and Its Environs
Around the year 1900,two of our ancestors, one in Connecticut
and the other in New Jersey, made the decision to move their families to
the wonderful little whaling town of Sag Harbor on the eastern end of Long
Island. They didn't know at the time that this move would culminate in a
long distance courtship of George Alexander Kimmerly of Jersey City, N.J.
and Gertrude Dunn of Sag Harbor.
Cornelius Dunn, who was a silver plater in Meriden,Conn.was
offered a $5.00 a week raise to move to Sag Harbor and work in the Rogers
Silver Co. there. He agreed, packed up his wife Della Watrous Dunn and their
seven children and off they went.
At about the same time,George Fick decided to retire
from the Fire Department in Jersey City,N.J. and headed to Sag Harbor with
his wife,Mary and two of his children,Lydie and Frank.A second son George
Henry stayed in N.J. Also, his daughter Elizabeth, who was already married, remained
in Jersey City with her husband Francis Kimmerly and son George.Over the
years, George visited his grandfather Fick in Sag Harbor often, particularly
during the summer. He travelled on the Long Island Railroad from Jersey
City.It was during one of these visits that he met Gertrude Dunn and eventually,
they married there on 23 Dec 1917 at St.Andrew's Church. They returned to
Jersey City and lived with George's parents for a short time.Within about
two years, they moved to Hawthorne with their first son George and settled
down on Brookside Ave.
It's interesting how fate enters our lives. You marvel
sometimes at what a difference a decision can make in the scheme of things.
