Introduction

In April of 1891 the Ontario census was being taken, just days after the loss of their mother Marian (Dand) McQuarrie.
John Lachlan McQuarrie is listed as age 35, widower, father and mother born in the U.S., with his children listed with their ages as follows: Margaret 12, William 10, Estella 8, James 5, Arthur 2 and Thomas 1 month of age. Thomas died later in the same year.

By the time the 1901 census had been taken, Margaret (22) had married a widower, David Tait (43), with children in Orillia and Estella "Stella" (18) also had married, Richard Redpath (29), and had begun a family in Singhampton.
Stella and Richards descendants would become many as this page would attest to.

The 1901 census also reveals James (15) had been adopted by the Ferguson family of Duntroon. Although contact among the siblings was maintained, William (age 20) and Arthur (age 12) have not been found in the census.

In 1904 when Margaret (McQuarrie) Tait and her newly expanded family and other members of the Tait family relocated in British Columbia, William and Arthur were among them there in Vancouver and working for them and/or living on their properties which were quite immense. Arthur was living in the Manhattan Apartments, which was owned by William Lamont Tait, David's half-brother, at the time he enlisted during World War I. David and Margaret managed these properties for William Lamont Tait. Margaret brother, William McQuarrie, was a automobile chauffeur for Wm. Tait.

Sometime before 1901, John Lachlan McQuarrie remarried to likely a widow, Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Sheares.
In 1901 they were residing in Glen Huron, Nottawasaga Twp. which is very close to the McQuarrie birthplace of Feversham and Duntroon where Jim was at with the Ferguson's and Singhampton where Stella was located with her new family.
In 1912 John's second wife, "Maggie", dies. In around the same time his son-in-law, Richard Redpath dies and an obituary for him mentions John coming to the funeral from Craigleith, a village just west of Collingwood. In about 1924 he moves to Collingwood and passes away there ten years later in 1934. His funeral director left an account of his burial in Collingwood but his grave has not been located.

After the death of Marian (Dand) McQuarrie in 1891, it is clear where some of the McQuarrie children ended up by 1901.
In the decade leading up to 1901, it should mentioned that some or all of the children, for periods of time maybe, would of been in the care of Marian's eldest sister Margaret (Dand) (Thompson) Bowes, as her obituary would indicate. The McQuarrie children were't alone in the experience of losing one or more of their parents. Their first cousins in the Edwards family and the Mungo Dand family shared their plight. It has been an oral tradition in the Edwards family that Margaret Dand Thomson Bowes played a large part at different times helping out with the orphaned families in the Osprey area.
A tribute wrote by Gary Edwards to Margaret Thomson, on the Rootsweb.com directory "Notable Women Ancestors".
