Dear Sister, [Jennie]
Just a few lines to let you know I am well. Hope this will find you all the same. We are not in the trenches at present. But out resting. Not doing much, only eating and sleeping. I was up to the trenches last night on fatigue and got home here about 12 o'clock . It rained nearly all the time we were away. I had the misfortune to step in a hole of water up to my knees and got wet. The mud is nearly ankle deep all over now owing to the heavy rains of this week. It sure makes things very miserable and the weather is beginning to get cold too.

I have not heard from you people for a couple of weeks. There was a Canadian mail yesterday. But I didn't get a letter at all. Perhaps there will be some this evening. The corporal has just come in with the mail and there is nothing for me.

Had letters from Gertie, Tom Davidson, Andy and Maggie last week. Will expects about 10,000 bushels of wheat this year. He has some flax and oats also. Andy has his old job back again, eh? I hope he stays up there and don't go and enlist again. I had a letter from Jim a couple of weeks ago. He said he heard Cora was going to get married. Believe he must have dreamt that. She isn't that foolish, I hope. Has Flossie got tied up yet and don't you think it is nearly time she did?

Now this is about all the gossip I can think of this time. We'll be going back in the trenches again soon. I forgot to tell you about being reviewed by King George and General Sir John French the other day. That was the first time I had saw the King as I was on leave up to Scotland when he reviewed us while we were in England. Now I must close for this time. Will write to Cora again about Sunday. Will close with love and best wishes to you.
From your brother Martin

Dear Sister,
Just got your welcome letter about an hour ago. Got one from Pendleton, Oregon from my cousin, Marion. She said her mother had visited you people and was back home now. Uncle John was away on a hunting trip in the mountains at that time. He is going up to Alberta, Canada after he comes back.

Did not hear from home this week. Had a letter from Maggie. Jessie must be very well on in school by now as she writes such a good letter. I will answer it some of those days. I hear from K. McIntyre often. She writes a good letter. Sorry to hear of W. Spencer's illness. Hope he gets well again soon.
