He was a travelling draper, going round the villages. He had a shop in Market Street, and Ellen ("Nelly") Bowden taught dressmaking in an upstairs room. Percy Bowden and Ernest Horne both helped him with the business.
According to Isobel Slatter (Bowden), the address in Wymondham was Victoria Terrace or Victoria Houses.
