Served in the Spanish American War as a Wagoner in Co. H, 1st Idaho Infantry.

Civilian Occupation: Machinist

After his service in the war, John worked for the U.S. Forest Service at Lowman, ID. We have a letter citing John for his superb action fighting the Clear Creek-Deadwood Divide fire in Aug. 1906. When he came to Port Angeles about 1910 he worked for the U.S. Forest Service at the Elwha District, under Chris Morgenroth, living up about where the present day Ranger Station is, near Griff Creek. To confirm the dates, John F. Hilt is listed in the 1910 census as single, registered in Piedmont Precinct of Olympic National Forest.

I don't know when he quit that job, but he had to ride a horse from there to work the Sol Duc Burn fire on Snider Ridge. His obituary states he left the Forest Service in 1914. He then worked at Penn. Garage, which is just south of Angeles Millworks at 16th & C streets. A job as a boilerman at the Charles Nelson Mill was next in the 1930's, then with Washington Motor Coach, located at Lincoln and Railroad streets, as a mechanic and bus driver on the Seattle to Port Angeles route. The last place he worked at was for the P.A. Western R.R. as a watchman and fire stoker.

John is buried in the veteran's plot at Ocean View Cemetery in Port Angeles, WA.

Dowell quit school after his mother's death in 1924 to care for the twins, Melvin & Mabel who were only 5. By 1927 he was working at a blacksmith's shop and later worked for Crown Zellerbach as a boomman. Dowell moved to Alaska in 1932 and was grubstaked by the territorial governor, Mr. Troy. They found gold traces but by the time they made arrangements to get the equipment in to start mining, the place had been designated a National Park. He married Bev in 1936 and returned to Alaska in 1942, working on the Alcan Highway, making enough to buy the farm on Reddick Road in Port Angeles. In later years, 'Pop' Hilt, as he was called, was a mechanic for Owens Brothers Construction and a 50 year member of the Dry Creek Grange.

Dowell's remains are interred at Oceanview Cemetery in Port Angeles, WA.

John Hilt served in the Civil War as a Private in the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Co. G, mustering in on 1 Sep 1862 at Mt. Pleasant, IA.

Hilt joined the regiment in the field at Helena, AR on 23 Nov 1862. In May and June of 1863 the 4th Iowa was a part of Major General U. S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee, under Colonel E. F. Winslow, seeing action in Mississippi at Raymond, Jackson, Birdsong's Ferry and 14 Mile Creek during the Vicksburg Campaign. Hilt became sick and was furloughed for 7 months in Sep 1863. The entire regiment was granted a 30 day furlough in Iowa in early 1864 and Hilt and the regiment returned to quarters at Memphis, TN at the end of the furlough as 'Veteran Volunteers'. William Tecumseh Sherman took command of the Army of the Tennessee and the 4th was assigned to Major General McPherson's 17th Army, Cavalry Brigade, during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Brigadier General Sturgis was given two Divisions and Winslow's Cavalry Brigade to guard McPherson's southern flank. They met General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Brice's Crossroads, MS and were badly beaten. The 4th Iowa and Company G is specifically mentioned in dispatches to higher headquarters describing their gallant efforts at the center of the battle. After the battle General Sturgis faced a Board of Inquiry for his actions. The 4th Iowa was later hand-picked for a Cavalry campaign in Missouri, fighting brilliantly at the Battle of the Osage. The unit returned to Benton Barracks, St. Louis MO in November of 1864 and Hilt was hospitalized again on 9 December where he served out his term of enlistment. Later, the unit was moved up the Ohio River to Louisville and on to Nashville. The 4th was involved in some of the last engagements of the war and was at Edgefield, TN when the war ended. Hilt was mustered out 15 Jun 1865 at St. Louis, MO.

John Hilt was married after the war and moved with his parents to homestead a parcel of land in Olive Branch precinct in the southwest corner of Lancaster County, Nebraska about 1870. John, along with the Thomas Ivers family, moved to Stockton, Iowa Precinct, Rooks County, Kansas by early 1874. John and Jane's twins (Joseph and Edgar) were born in Stockton. By 1889 they had moved to Boise, ID, by train, as described in letters from Mabel Ivers Scott, John's niece (she was born to Polly Hilt and Tom Ivers in Boise in 1890). John's death certificate, with information provided from his daughter, Addie, stated he was born in KY and his father was born in Scotland. She may have been remembering a family story that the Hilt's were of Scotch descent, but Jesse himself reflected in several censuses that he was born in Ohio.

the following is excerpted from John and Annie Laddusaw's 50th anniversary announcement:

Their move to Oregon by covered wagon began at Le Mars, Iowa on June 16, 1888 (John had family living there). A group of seven wagons traveled via the Landers cutoff of the Sweetwater Trail. Annie remembers the frustration of making camp in the evening after a long day's travel while still able to look back and see the camp of the night before. They forded the Snake River 10 miles below American Falls, arriving in Boise City on September 2, 1888. Boise was just a military barracks at the time, the first hotel was under construction and the bank was a log cabin. The men found work cutting timber or hauling ore from the mines and decided to stay in Boise.
