The travelers set up camp and stayed there for three years rasing

County Virginia, and died 18 November 1808 in Russell CTY. VA.. He married MARY Abt.
1757. She died Aft. 1849.
Notes for JAMES BUSH:
Records show James purchased land
130 acres in Amherst County Virginia, in Aug. 1771 (patent no. 40 p367) . Moved
to Washington County Va. some time prior to 1776. In 1776 James help build
Hamblin's Fort, which is in Castles Woods, this is also the place James and his
wife Mary moved (North East of Abingdon Virginia). Records
show in April 1782 he purchased 100 acres in Washington County on south side of
Clinch River known as Russians Place.
( land grant not registered until 23 Aug 1788 grant no 18 p165, however
copy of actual grant shows 5 April 1782.)
James was instrumental in getting Russell County formed from a part of
Washington County in 1785. (See Petition to Form Russell County in chapter IV documents.
In June of 1796 James purchased an additional 80 acres in Castles Woods
on both sides of Mill Creek, adjoining Charle Beckleys land (grant no. 36 p17). The land was purchased from Henry
Hamblin for 80 Pounds Virginia money; here he built his home and a Grist Mill.
(1790 deeds refer to
"Bush Mill Creek." it
seems he owned the Cowan-Russell Fort
( originally named Fort Preston by Capt. William Russell.) for it is
after referred to as Bush's Fort, this is the same location of his daughter Ann
scalping.
Another point confirming Ann's Scalping at Bush's Fort is the
inscription on Charles Beckley's grave located in the family cemetery at
Castlewood, and reads as following " To the Memory of Charles Bickley, Sr.
Born in Amhurst Co., Va. July27, 1753 Died at Bickley's Mills, Russell Co., Va,
June 1, 1839. He was captain of
Militia and one of the three men who defended Bush's Fort, against 17 Indians.
James fought in Dunmore's War
(Dunmore's War Record, pp. 229-230 & 269) which was fought before the
Revolutionary War 1774.
Deed Book II
James & Mary Bush to William Elam 1794.
Pg. 1 26 May 1794 James Bush &
wife, Mary, to William Elam for 30#, 45A surveyed 13 Dec. 1782, granted James
Bush by Commonwealth patent beginning at corner of Joh Heals land. Filed: 26
May 1795. Signed: James & Mary Bush.
There was question as
to how James fit in the Bush Family. One problem is there are two James Bushes
one b. 1759 the son of Josiah the second b. 1739 the son of Philip, the 1739
James is documented in the Gordon Aronhime Papers, located in the Virginia
State Library. For the James of
1759 he is documented by D. A. R. membership papers DAR # 333151 applied for 13
April 1942, Accepted 2 May 1942.
It should be noted
that the Gordon Aronhime Papers show James bush s/o Philip Bush with document
source as the will of Philip Bush dtd 1771,The copy of the will we have does
not show this, therefore more documentation is needed to confirm same.

Notes for WILLIAM BUSH:
Friend and companion
of Daniel Boone, Boone married
Williams 2nd cousin Rebecca Bryan.
William Bush assisted in establishing
American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Private, Capt. John Baley's Co. Col. George
Rogers, Clark Illinois Regiment.
Reference is made from National No. 159223 enlisted May 10 1779, Discharged March 4 1783 Re enlisted on
the same date.
In the fall of 1785, a colony of
Virginians, among whom were five
Bush brothers, came to what is now Clark County, Ky., and settled on
Howard's Lower Creek. Their
descendants were so numerous and scattered over so large a territory that it
was given the name "The Bush Settlement".
The first of the brothers to come to
Kentucky was William Bush, called "Captain Billy", because he was
such a noted Indian fighter. He
came to Boonesborough with Daniel Boone in April, 1775. When he returned to his home in Orange Co.
Va, he gave such wonderful report of the "jungle of luxuriance" that
he was able to persuade forty families of Orange and Culpepper counties to form
a colony and start in the summer of 1780 for Kentucky. Many of the colony were Baptists, and
they organized themselves into a church body and started for Boonesborough,
near which they intended to settle.
They reached the frontier fort at the Holston River in December 1780. Here they were met by a runner from
Captain Billy Bush, who had preceded them and was then in the fort at
Boonesborough , advising them to remain a Holston for the time being as the
Indians were giving so much trouble in Kentucky at that time that it was not
wise for them to proceed further.
They remained at Holston for three years, during which time they were
joined by many other families coming to Kentucky. Among those that joined them was Rev. Robert Elkin, a
Baptist preacher and they chose him as their pastor. He remained their pastor for forty-two years.
On September 1, 1783, the colony again
started on their journey. The long
line of travelers, some riding
horseback, some walking with their faithful slaves, their bedding and
baggage on pack horses, moved cautiously along the narrow Wilderness Road. Over mountains, across valleys, ever on
the alert for Indians or other foes that so thickly abounded along their
way. Bears, buffalos, wolves, elk
and sometimes herds of deer were often seen. They were compelled to encamp for days at a time to rest and
forage. Every Sunday they encamped
for the purpose of engaging in worship.
When these stops were made, pickets were put out both day and night to
watch most vigilantly. The
distance that now can be traveled in a few days, over the Boone Highway, was
then a journey of many weeks.
The colony reached Craigs Station, near
what is now Lancaster, Lincoln Co., where they again tarried until the fall of
1784. Here they separated, part of
them going to "Barrens" in the southwestern part of the state. The majority of them, however moved to
the north side of the Kentucky river and occupied the lands located for them by
William Bush.
The men were farmers and traders. They were all celebrated Indian
fighters. Several of them served
in the Revolutionary War. Just how
many children were in each family when they came to Kentucky is not known , but the 1810 census shows that there were seventeen persons
named Bush listed as heads of
families numbering 96 in all and 66 slaves.
Willed by his father Phillip 100 acers
which was purchased from William Bryan.

He married NANCY COUCH Bef. 1794 in Clinch River state of Virginia. She was born Abt. 1782, and died Aft.

Notes for DRURY BUSH:
Revolutionary war pension filed
in Kentucky, Perry County on 10th of June 1833 gives the following facts.
1) Dury birth year was
1758, based on age at time of pension application.
2) His wife's maiden
name was Couch, her birth year was 1782 and their marriage was prior to January
1st. 1794.
3) Dury and Nancy was
married on Clinch River in Virginia, which is where Dury's family lived at the
time. Dury was Abt 36, she was 12.
4) Dury is referred to
as Doctor Drury Bush . we do not know at this time if this is related to his
profession or a nick name.
Dury first joined the military in 1776
(age 18) which is about the time
his family moved to Washington County area. Dury leaving his family at this
time could explain why his father James willed him only $1.00, and all other
valuables to his brother and
sisters. This is speculation only.

Notes for AUSTIN BUSH, SR.:
In 1798 Austin married a girl by the
name of Nancy Cash. It is not
known if this was her true name or not as she was supposedly Cherokee
Indian.
Austin was willed by his father the
land he lived on, how much is not known , the will only states the land William
Nobel lives on which is the same tract Austin lives on. The balance of the land
and plantation tools was left for his mothers use with Austin managing
same. At the time of the mothers
death the estate would be divided between three children. Drury was left out of
the will for whatever the reason.
Austin was 43 years of age at the birth
of his first child, and 70 years at the birth of his last child.

Notes for ANN BUSH:
Lewis Preston Summers book Southwest
Virginia 1746-1786 , Washington County 1776-1870 gives the following account of
the scalping of Ann ( Bush ) Neece.
"Early in the year 1783, about
twelve years after the first settlement at Castle's Woods, a party of northward
Indians invaded the settlement and attacked the fort at Hamblin's Mill.
This fort was erected by Henry
Hambling, one of the first settlers in that section , in the year 1776, with
the assistance of Henry Dickinson, Charles Bickley, William Robertson, William
Russell, Patrick Porter*, Henry Neece*, William Wharton, Humphrey Dickinson,
Frederick Fryley, James Bush*, Archelas Dickinson, Samuel Ritchie*, Jerry
Harrold, Richard and William Long* and William Bowlin, the first settlers in
that section.
The home of Henry Hamblin had,
previously to this time, been twice invaded by Indians, and in the spring of
the year 1782, his entire family, with the exception of a little boy, who was
carried into captivity, were killed and scalped, and now this fort was again
assailed by a company of Indians Numbering seventeen.
The Indians first appeared in the
community at the house of Joseph Ray, whom they killed and scalped along with
several of his family and a neighbor by the name of Samuel Hughes, who happened
to be at Ray's house at the time; besides killing these persons they made
several others prisoners before they reached the fort. As they approached the fort they met a
young woman by the name of Ann (Bush ) Neece, whom they tomahawked and scalped
and left for dead. "they then approached the fort and were discovered by
Simon Oscher, Henry Dickenson and Charles Bickley, who happened to be working
at a mill near by. The Indians
observing them about the same time and the white men being unarmed, their
situation was a fearful one. It
was now to be a struggle which party should get to the fort first. Charles Bickley remarked, "Boys,
follow me," and they all started for the fort a full speed, the Indians
halting fire upon them. They got
safely into the fort through a shower of balls, without receiving a scratch,
thus literally running the gauntlet.
There were two guns in the fort, and with these Ocsher and Dickenson,
each, killed and Indian. The
balance of the savages knowing nothing of the strength of the fort, and their
guns being empty. hastily picked up their fallen companions and fled into the
woods.
Some hours after their departure, and
while there were still apprehensions of their return by the few persons in the
fort, Ann Neece was seen slowly approaching, as bloody as if she had been
dipped in a pool of gore, with streams jetting from her head apparently as
numerous as had been the hairs of her head before she was scalped, each jet
about the size of a hair. She
recovered and raised a family, and some of her descendants are still living in
Russell county."

1765 in Amhurst Co. Va., and died Aft. 1850. She married JAMES TURNER.
Notes for MARY BUSH:
The Mountain Empire Genealogical
Quarterly, Winter 1987 issue, page 251 gives a story of the Capture of Ann and
Mary Bush . Washington County , and was based on a statement filed in Floyde
County, Kentucky by James Fraley , which was as following.
" In April, the date has escaped
me, 1780 I enlisted for one year in the County of Washington and state of
Virginia, as an Indian Spy, under Col. Campbell, Captain Snoddy and Lieutenant
Cowan, to spy in the same section.
Early in June the Indians made their appearance in our quarter of
Washington County . They first
stole many horses. In July they
killed one Dorton and stole two girls, Ann and Mary Bush, and made off for
Canada, ( most likely Ohio ). They
succeeded in getting down on the water of Sandy with them as far as Jenny's
Creek in Floyd County, about twelve miles from the courthouse. (Prestonsburg).
At that time there was not a single white person living in Floyd County
Ky. It was certainly an Indian
country then. Our company came up
to the Indians when they were in the act of skinning a buffalo they had just
killed. Our men fired on the
Indians and they retreated to the camp about 200 yards distant, and as they ran
by, they tomahawked Ann Bush. Mary
jumped down the bank and escaped any violence. Ann Bush got over it (the tomahawking) and was afterwards
tomahawked again and still survived."
This is the first encounter with
the Indians, the second, occurred in 1783, and is outlined in More About Ann
Bush.
