Thomas Cusheon attested for the St Helena Regt 22 Dec 1853. It was quite common in Victorian times for men to enlist in the winter as a means of survival. He then went off to St Helena for over ten years, and left the island as a Sergeant in the 57th Regiment of Foot. He was a Corporal when he married 24 Nov 1860 Charlotte Ward.
