All Cushing's have the same common ancestor in the Viking Hrolf Nefja who was Jarl (or Earl) of Throndjem and Maeras (now Norway) in AD 826. Hrolf had three grandsons, probably of which the most famous is Erik the Red and his son Lief Eriksson who discovered America about 1000 AD. Another grandson by the name of Cu and his son Cu-son [from which the derivation of Cushing began] invaded Ireland and established their domain known as Cu's Land in the Counties of Limerick, Tipperary and Cork, but lost it all when Cromwell rose to power. The third grandson was Gongu Hrolf (Walking Rolf, aka: Rollo) became the first Duke of Normandy (now France). From this vantage point Rollo and his fierce Norsemen would pillage Norfolk County, England on a regular basis until one of our famous relatives by the name of William the Conqueror defeated King Harald of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. After crowning himself King of England, William allotted 42 mansions and estates across Norfolk County to his loyal kinsmen, the Cushings, who accompanied him on his quest. Matthew Cushing b: 25 Feb 1588 on the estate in Hingham, Norfolk, England descended from this line. He emigrated to Hingham, Massachusetts aboard the Diligent in 1638. Most Cushings in America today descend from this branch. |
